Don Knotts: Shakiest Gun in the West, Ghost and Mr Chicken, & The Reluctant Astronaut

Ah, Vic Mizzy. The Stravinsky of the backlot.

Don Knotts: Shakiest Gun in the West, Ghost and Mr Chicken, & The Reluctant Astronaut

What? No How to Frame a Figg fans here? Truly one of Knotts' more undervalued efforts, with Joe Flynn, Elaine Joyce and Frank (various voices on The Simpsons) Welker, from a story by Knotts himself.

Welcome to our new Satellite Radio Area

This is a great topic -- thanks! I'd love to pick up a satellite radio for home use (I don't spend a lot of time in the car), but must admit I've got reservations before I go out and plunk down the two hundred or so bucks to set it up. My main concern is reception. I live in Brooklyn, NY...

    SEINFELD movie allusions

In re #162 (The Betrayal): It's both a literary and a filmic reference to Harold Pinter's play Betrayal (1978, I think), which was eventually filmed with Ben Kingsley, Jeremy Irons and Blythe Danner. The plot has to do with a man whose wife sleeps with his best friend, and it's told backwards in...

Films that you fear may NEVER be released on DVD.

Nobody has mentioned Les Blair's 1993 film Bad Behaviour, either. Stephen Rea and Sinead Cusack are the leads; the plot (with improvised dialogue and performances a la Mike Leigh) revolves around an small Irish family in London. Great comedy; low-key; great performances all around. October Films...

HBO has canceled MIND OF THE MARRIED MAN

It was not as unwatchable as, say, Sex and the City, and it made its uncomfortable points well. But then, if you want to see this sort of thing done right, there's the BBC's Manchild, which runs on BBC America pretty regularly -- ABC or CBS is developing an American version.

**** The official "Curb your Enthusiasm" discussion thread

(Actually, that's the last SIX episodes of the third season next Monday, 8:00-11:00. Then they'll get added to the daily reruns of the show on HBO Comedy at 11:30pm.)

La Regle du Jeu (THE RULES OF THE GAME) - any news?

I hope so too. It's a crime that this film -- the only movie to consistently make Sight & Sound's best films of all time list for the past 50 years -- hasn't been given the full-out treatment yet. I've heard that a restored 35mm print is making the rounds; let's hope this was in preparation...

    TV Shows screaming for DVD

I'm waiting for Curb Your Enthusiasm and additional seasons of The Larry Sanders Show, as well as the release of the old British comedy series Yes, Minister/Yes, Prime Minister. Acorn and the Beeb are doing pretty well on series like Are You Being Served, but these seem to have dropped through...

Well, there are a lot of references to Larry David's role on Seinfeld in CYE, so he's going to find out sooner or later.

Universal focus on back catalog in 2003

Let's get the W.C. Fields Paramounts, at least. Criterion's done pretty well on the Sturges movies, after all, as well as on their Bank Dick and Fields shorts. Instead, Universal's been concentrating on issuing their Bob Hope and Abbott & Costello catalog ...

    Citizen Kane voted Best Film.....again

Surprising not to see Fritz Lang's M or Murnau's Last Laugh (though Sunrise is a good second choice for Murnau). But no Bresson or Dreyer? And all this begs the question: Where the hell is the DVD of Rules of the Game? While I appreciate Criterion's need to get a special, feature-packed...

**** The official "Curb your Enthusiasm" discussion thread

An insider tells me that there will be a DVD set of CYE Seasons 1 and 2 ready for holiday giving this year ... no word on extras or inclusion of the hour-long pilot, though.

    In praise of 'slow' movies

I'm surprised not to see Robert Bresson, Carl Theodor Dreyer or even Ingmar Bergman in this topic ... next to their films, "Stranger Than Paradise" is "Die Hard". And one of the great, underrated American directors, John Cassavetes, certainly falls in this category. On this topic, Paul...
