FYI, fhere is a complete french blu-ray release with "Restored Masters" coming in the next few days which also includes season 8-18 https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Columbo-Lintegrale-Blu-ray/342543/
Nice! Now, where is the "A Few Words about... - The Man Who Knew Too Much -- in 4k UHD"??
Are the "Before" and "After" images in the video correct in terms of framing? The "Before" ones shows a lot more info on top and bottom.
How is the framing? The blu-ray is a bit zoomed in but also shows a bit more of the right side whereas the DVD shows a bit more info on the left, top and bottom.
Ok, thanks. The Arrow blu-ray"Features a 2016 4K restoration from the original 35mm negative supervised and approved by William Friedkin", was Friedkin involved in the making of the UHD as well?
I have the 2007 blu-ray and the Arrow. I have not done an A-B comparison because I archived the 2007 when I got the Arrow but I am watching the Arrow right now on my calibrated display and it looks superb. David M did a great job on this one. I doubt the 4K UHD will look much better.
Edit...
Gary's comments on the older blu-rays (2007 MGM Japanese, 2009 MGM US) and the Arrow:
"Obviously, the 2007 and 2009, using the clunkier MPEG-2 encode as opposed to AVC and can't hold a candle to the 4K restoration, advertised as 'cinematographer-approved'. The superiority is duly noted in colors...

Press release:
"The original theatrical mono audio has also been newly restored as well, providing a richer and broader frequency response than previously possible."
Sorry, I did not check who wrote the review, I was just pointing out where the text came from which is why I mentioned the bits but I have no idea who the reviewer Stephen Bjork is... :thumbs-up-smiley:
Bill Hunt:
" There’s a greater sense of presence in the Atmos mix, with more ambience as well as a bit of directionality to the sound effects. The previous 5.1 and 2.0 mixes still largely retained the mono nature of the original effects, but they’re more spread around here into all of the...
And how did the remastered original mono sound?
from Brett Cameron on another forum:
"It sounds a lot different to what people are use to hearing that is for sure. Other than early releases like the Image LD from 1995, just about every home release of this track sounded nothing like the...
I have the MGM as well but your bad experience might be caused by having the Contrast setting too high?
I have used this pattern on the Spears & Munsil BD to set the Contrast http://spearsandmunsil.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Contrast_Y.png
but not the bars with numbers, instead look at the...
I saw this at a cinema in Sweden (Bio Victor at Swedish Film Institute) yesterday, a 35mm print. Wonderful to see it on a big screen!
What I noticed right away was that it it had a different aspect ratio than what I was used to.
According to IMDB, it had an intended ratio of 1.66 : 1 for Europe...
"For IMAX exhibition, we had the 1.43 version. That’s the true massive IMAX screen which intercuts between 1.43 and 2.39. We then have the more common IMAX, which is 1.9 to 2.39. We have to oversee it on both the laser and Xenon projection in those two formats. There is also 3D of those formats...
