My Tempest sub is complete! But it's not what I expected...HELP!!

One other thought that hasn't been mentioned is that the "popping" sound could also be the driver bottoming because of air leaks in the cabinet. These in effect change the tuning and allow the driver to unload prematurely. Carefully check all of your joints and cutouts. You can use incense smoke...

    Big room need big sub???

Garth, My home theater is in an area about 1100 sq/ft. One good thing is that large areas tend to be a little more even in response than a small room. The other thing to think about is that even though the room is big, people usually aren't listening to music or movies over on the far side. So...

What DIY sub to match with Maggies for music???

Welll, you originally said you wanted to spend about $400 and you wanted to have an "endtable" sized result. I would go with a sealed Adire Shiva or Tempest for a music only application. One caution, this will depend on how big your room is, and how loud you listen. If you don't have your...

Q about build set of fronts

The "general" opinion is that if you have the room, matching speakers are the best solution for mains/centers. It keeps the voicing the same across the front. There will be some tradeoffs if you lay an MTM on its' side for center duty but most people find it quite acceptable.

Got my tempest up and running... underwhelmed HELP!

Also, double check the seal around the terminal cup. I have used FrostKing brand rope caulk for building speakers. It provides a great seal but can be hard to get apart if you decide to remove a driver for some reason. Air leaks can deffinately cause big problems. With my Adire alignment I...

Adire Kit281...how do they compare to...

My brother-in-law built an airplane in an apartment so anything is possible. 19' wingspan, rotax engine, taildragger... His neighbors were sure surprised when he carried it out to the trucks to take it to the airfield.. :D

Got my tempest up and running... underwhelmed HELP!

Also, is it possible that you have any air leaks in the cabinet? If your tuning is in effect too high the driver will unload and easily head for the xmax limit. The last possibility is that there is some mechanical problem with that particular driver. After you've double checked everything else...

help on building a diy sub

I looked at all three you listed. All have very small xmax and relatively high Fs. I am guessing they're aimed at horn loading applications. I don't see them as a practical choice for home theater subs. Here's a quote from another thread on this forum. "You've probably heard of EBP before...

Adire Kit281...how do they compare to...

Brian, I am not in Atlanta, but about 4 hours north. If you ever want to do a Saturday drive I'd be happy to let you spend some hours with my 281s. Maybe you could get Pat to come with you and we could have a mini meet. Doug "Lexman" lives here so you could visit the Cat Cable home also.

help on building a diy sub

Riaad, In "general", car subs don't usually work out well for HT applications. You can deffinately order on-line from several good manufacturers. You may want to check with Dan at Adire to see if he could arrange international shipment... www.adireaudio.com Also, www.madisound.com /...

    Isobarik subs

FWIW, Subs aren't the only app for isobaric drivers. I have read some tests of Totum (sp) and Linn monitors that also use the design in monitor applications. The resultant speaker will have possibly deeper response from the same footprint and also possibly better distortion figures. The downside...

    Ultimate Bass!!

Just remember this pic the next time someone says "hey, I got these neat plans for a "horn loaded" sub. True horn subs are very, very big. There is a plan on the net for a so called horn sub called the "Wicked One" that can double as a coffee table. You have to wonder how that can be. I have...

    Adire Audio Rava

I've got a Dharman and Tempest both running and could maybe get close to ref in my room (7500 ft^3). I've never tried because it shakes the heck out of my house as it is. For all but demo work I can run either of my subs by themselves if I want with NO complaint. I am usually -15 or more on...

    Adire Audio Rava

:emoji_thumbsup: In a 10 x 20 room I can't imagine that you wouldn't be pleased. Put it in one of the front corners if possible and sit back for some "real" bass for the first time. Over the long haul, you may want to save for a BFD as your room is going to have some uneven response peaks and...

    Adire Audio Rava

Mark> A lot may depend on your preferences for movies/music and the size of the space you are going to put it in, not to mention your bass goals... If you value music to any significant degree the Rava may be the choice. The sealed design is very musical while still doing justice to movies...

sealed kit281's for heavy music duty/light theater duty?

I have a vented set of 281s. Back when I built mine I also talked to DanW about going sealed for music. In reality, the vented version is a very "tight" sounding speaker. IIRC, his advice was to go sealed "if" space was an issue or in a misic ONLY situation with a good sub. However, the...

    Line Array speaker Design?????

I was also really interested in line arrays at one point. However, the more I read the more I became convinced that they are extrememly hard to get right. Receiver on 4 or 8 ohms with 6ohms speakers??

The short answer is try the 8 ohm setting. Just check the top to the receiver to see if it is getting too hot. A lot will depend on your listening preferences. If you don't go for Rolling Stones Live levels then you may not have the slightest problem even with some 4 ohm speakers. However...

    speaker kits

Wellll, I am assuming you want the cabinet to be part of the "kit". If that is the case try www.zalytron.com for a pretty good selection. Also, www.northcreekmusic.com If you want to try building your own enclosure that would mean a lot more choices.
