Titles of Flip Discs being test marketed...

The CD side has worked fine for me in all the players I have tried it in (including boom boxes, PC drives, car and DVD players). Reality sounds pretty good, and I prefer the immersion of the DD tracks (448kbps) to the stereo (PCM 48k, 16bit), but then I am partial to surround. It is...

It was originally recorded analog. I don't know how this release was mastered, nor do I know if the bit depth is only 16. Personally I think 192 is a waste (particularly knowing why it is in the spec (it's not because of any listening test...)

There are lossy tracks (DD 5.1) on some of the discs, but they also have hi-res surround mixes and hi-res stereo. Sony has none of the above on their discs, just PCM stereo tracks, like the CD side, except at 48k instead of 44.1k which is not usually defined as lossy.

The only lame execution is the Sony stereo PCM tracks. They are not much of an improvement (if any, and that depends on the master tape) over the redbook layer. Some of the image extras are nice though. The rest offer pretty much everything identically to their DVD-A counterparts. I...

Maybe it would be helpful to some doubters to view these discs as DVD-Audio discs that are completely compatible with any CD player and any DVD player (with maybe some wierd exceptions). I consider that good news!

All the discs that have DVD-A counterparts appear to have the same audio offerings. Meaning you can stop imagining and yes they do have Hi-res surround, Hi-res stereo, and DD 5.1 all on the same disc, along with video contecnt and other extras. Sony is the exception here, and I think you CAN...

Yes, it has a short film "The Story Of Back In Black" as well as simple discography with thumbnails of the album covers that are hyperlinks to a larger image of the cover and the song titles. That's it. Pretty sparse. Some of the other titles are better featured. Buzz

So far all the Sony discs have only 2 channel PCM at 48k on the DVD side.

    RDS on AVR Tuners?

I have not surveyed RDS in the receiver market. But I'll add that RDS can do more then what your car radio displays. In the Boston market there are three or four major radio stations which broadcast the artist, title and year of the recording playing, and then give you sneak peak at what is up...

    Tag Mclaren AV32R ----> AV192R

There will be many options so the price could conceivably span the range you mention or more. Obviously a high quality video scaler, the digital video interface tuner etc, are expensive to do right, and, also obviously, not everyone will want them (or afford them). The base price is $4000 for...

Are there any stand-alone decoders for DPLII?

Since PLII involves processing of 5 channels minimum, there is not really a practical way to get signal in and out of other products (receivers). It does not make much sense economically either if you consider you would likely want an A/D, a DIR, DSP, D/A, and all this goes in a case, with...

    Prologic 2

Interesting. I have the LD of ten Summoners tales which has the CD mix on it. I much prefer it in PL II to stereo (and prefer stereo to the original Pro Logic). I generally like the DTS disc more, although part of that is just overall clarity. But comparing the DTS disc to the PLII decoded...

    Prologic 2

Nice post Jeremy. You clearly have listened enough to appreciate the magic it is capable of. I love what it can do for the front soundstage, particularly center vocalists. The example you gave with three vocals is one I will have to hear for myself. It sometimes takes a few second to dial in...

Can I coil excess sub cable?

I avoid coiling the cables as a coil of wire has the potential to become a type of filter. If you open up your speaker and look at the crossover you will find little coils of wire used to filter the signal. This is a good time not to be anal-compulsive and just make a small pile of cable...

2 Center channels instead of 1... Anyone?

I would not recommend adding a second center channel speaker. You will likely make the dialog harsher and less intelligible. When two speakers reproduce a single mono signal they sound waves they put out collide. Depending on the distance apart from each other and the frequency they are...

    Why 7.1?

It was not equipment manufacturers that pushed this, but sound designers looking for more control of the surround soundfiled then that afforded by only two channels. ------------------ Buzz Goddard TAG McLaren Audio

What is new out on the horizon besides DPL II?? Nothing that I can think of off hand. DVD-A digital interface. DTS 96/24 DPLII 7 channel? DD with HDCD? Digital Video Interface Vegetarian Whoppers ------------------ Buzz Goddard TAG McLaren Audio
