Sure, just buy a standalone (not the Directv combo). It will change the channels on your cable box if you use one. You'll need to subscribe to the service which is $10/mo or $250 for as long as you have the box.

You don't even need to split the cable. If you put the TiVo in "standby" mode, it will record one show while passing through the cable signal to the TV or VCR to watch a second show.

As Luke said, SP's are confined to one station. If you create the SP from an NBC airing, you'll only get the NBC episodes. You can take it one step further by making the SP for "1st run only" eliminating any reruns.

I upgraded from a preinstalled version of ME fine, but I'd like to do a clean install. The problem is I can't find a definite answer to this:
ME was preinstalled so I have no disc.
The only windows disc I have is a 98 upgrade disc.
98 was never on this machine.
I need to know if I can do a...
1 combo + 1 standalone requires 2 seperate TiVo subs. If you buy a 2nd combo, you don't pay for another TiVo sub, just the $5 DTV fee.

Replacing a standard DTV receiver won't work until you buy another DTiVo...
Buy 1 DTiVo and pay for the service.
Any additional DTiVo's you add are only $5/mo.
Multiple standalone units require seperate subscriptions. Directv/TiVo combos only require the $5/mo DTV fee and have dual tuners inside (2 of these would allow you to record 4 shows at the same time).
You'll use the TiVo guide (but you can look at both) since you'll do all your scheduling with it. TiVo's control cable boxes with an IR blaster which is included.
My phone lines are rated for 14.4 KBPS, but can eek out 28.8 most days. Should I double that time? And can I tell the TiVo what time of the day to call?
The call time varies by how much info is needed...more channels = more to load. You can force a call anytime and the next call is about...
Do I need to hook up the TiVo to a phone line, so as to download information about programs? Would that use the phone line all the time, or just once in a while?
It will make 1 call a day (about 10-15 minutes).
If I get two TiVos, one for each TV (highly unlikely, too pricey), can I use the...
First step is to plug the TiVo into a different set of inputs to see if it's the TiVo's output or the receivers input.

That makes it even easier! Just delete a couple hours at a time (10 seconds). If you want to add something back, you can do it from the live guide without missing what you're watching.

Did you know you can delete an item from the To Do list just by hitting "clear"? Killing 10 shows and all suggestions should take 30-60 seconds.

I don't get it... all you have to do is turn off suggestions and clear the days To Do list. Takes a few seconds and it won't try to change the channel.

There are several wireless options. You can even buy one from TiVo's website. Just make sure you get one designed to handle modems.

You can keep the dish, but you'll need to purchase a dual lnb. Dual tuner upgrades are rolling out now, go buy a dual lnb and some RG6 cable!

All TiVo's sold after last October state that service is required...not optional. You can use it a little right now, but that free use can be taken away at any point.

Yes, the combo records and plays back 5.1.
Yes, it has 2 tuners inside (the software update to make the 2nd tuner work is a few weeks away though).
Yes, you'll need to run a 2nd line from a dual lnb dish.
Yes, you can use both units, the wiring will depend on your system.
Keep in mind the...
All TiVo's sold after October 2000 state that the service is required. If you won't/can't use the service, I would not recommend buying one...they are reduced to an almost unusable state without it. UltimateTV only works on Directv and ReplayTV forces you to pay for the service even if you...
