That seemed to be what studios did in the infancy of 4K discs. They had crazy bright UHD.
They tamed it after a while to much more appropriate levels.
But I guess some people want Nuclear HDR.
Sure, though the uproar about "French Connection" on BD was related to the colors. I think the dialogue change has only impacted streaming and not a BD release.
Point remains: people used to get upset with tinkering down to home video releases.
I mean, this goes back to "The Matrix" on DVD...
Yup. And people went nuts about how Lucas "reimagined" all the "Star Wars" films.
People always get upset when filmmakers change colors for these releases.
I really don't understand why Cameron's "reimagining" is A-OK when all the others got lambasted.
Despite how I might appear at times ;), I'm not delusional. I don't think Cameron - or Lucas, or whoever - will see my posts and say "that weirdo's right!" :D
They want what they want and that's their right.
But it remains my right to bitch and moan about it! :D
And to be clear: I've not yet...
Yeah, as mentioned, I saw "Wish" theatrically and didn't think much of it - I don't feel it's a terrible movie but it was meh at best.
The "Disney completist thing" runs strong in me, though! :)
Sure, but I do view it as the slippery slope of revisionism just because grain removal inevitably alters the original image.
Can they use technical whatnot to "bring back" what might be changed? Yeah, but that's still an artificial means that I think is unnecessary and potentially harmful.
I...
And that's why some of us object to what's happened.
Which I continue to feel confused that this position seems controversial.
Has a desire to want film restoration vs. "shiny new reimagining" suddenly become outrageous?
But it's not like JC himself was gonna do the restoration work.
Hand it off to people he trusts, let them do it, review the result, ask for changes if desired.
Maybe he didn't want to pay for those "countless hours", but he wasn't gonna spend those hours himself.
Sure, but I want the movie to look the way James Cameron wanted it to look when released.
Again, one can say "but that's not what he really really wanted!"
But I want how he wanted it to look to the best of his abilities with the filmmaking tools of the time.
Like I said above: wanting to see...
Feel free to argue semantics, but I think you understand I mean that I'd like to see movies look they way the filmmaker made them look during initial release.
Of course, people will toss out all sorts of caveats.
I just want a movie that's not been tampered with years later because the...
They probably do, but have you ever actually attempted to return anything to a Walmart location? There's always roughly 827 people in line. You need to bring a meal because you'll be there all day! :D
Anyway, I kinda feel like "you could go to the store!" for any part of this misbegotten...
Couldn't the "it looks great if you don't know how it's supposed to look" argument be made for a lot of movies?
Aren't we supposed to be about 4Ks and BDs looking as much like the way they're "supposed to look" as possible and not revised/revamped?
Update: "Wish" 4K came today.
Twice.
That original copy they said couldn't be delivered and would be cancelled? No - they sent it out again, so I got 2 separate copies at the same time.
And of course they charged me for both.
Given the uselessness of the online chat, I called them this...
The 4K was sold out on the WM website for weeks. When it popped up over the weekend, I didn't want to take a chance that it wouldn't be found at a local store.
Besides, how in the world was I supposed to know this whole thing would turn into such a catastrophe?
Seriously - you're blaming me...
Planned to get the 4K through DMC but they don't have it, so Walmart is the only game in town.
Ordered Monday and they "attempted delivery" Tuesday but claimed it couldn't be delivered.
Why? No idea - they wouldn't tell me.
Rather than try again, they cancelled my order, so I needed to...
Not on disc - and may never be - but I saw "Kung Fu Panda 4" 3D yesterday.
The 3D was okay but unmemorable. Some decent depth but not much that stood out to me as impressive.
Disappointing because the 3D BD for the first movie was terrific!
Didn't see "KFP2" BD 3D - should probably try to...
Not being historically accurate has never been an issue for Oscars.
"Napoleon" was a box office flop that got mediocre reviews. Glad you liked it, but it had zero real awards buzz.
I get your point about which song has more meaning in the movie, but that's never seemed to be an actual consideration in terms of what wins.
If "importance to the story" mattered, then no Bond theme ever would've won.
"Ken" was by far the more memorable song in the abstract - ie, separate...
Which fuels my belief that Scorsese movies now get noms just out of reflex and not because they really deserve it.
Not that I thought either "Irishman" or "Killers" offered bad movies. Both were decent and had good moments, though both also were waaaay longer than they needed to be.
They just...
I would've felt surprised if Spidey won just because the prior animated Spidey flick already won.
To date, "Toy Story 3" and "TS 4" are the only "franchise double winners" in the award's relatively short history.
Be interesting to see what happens with the 3rd Spidey.
I'm curious to do a deep dive into Oscar-winning songs and see how often something "less conventional" wins.
I agree that the Eilish track likely won because it's more in the "Oscar vein" but "Ken" was clearly a much more popular/well-known song.
And the performance on the show brought down...
