Need opinions about dedicated theater room

Hello; That sounds like a nice setup. My room is 13'6" X 20'. I have 1 row of 4 Berkline recliners at about 13' and a back row of 3 real theater rocker seats. The front row has about 1.5' on each side. As you can see, my setup is very similar to yours and it works fine. I find that the two...

    Electrical Wiring Concerns

Hi; I am not an electrician but I spent many hours reading forums like this and this is what I ended up with. 2 - 20 amp circuits just for the av rack and projector. I use regular plugs because I don't have any amps that require the full 20 amps. You have to think in terms of what...

Problem with Background noise in long cable run

Are the cables withing 2 feet of regular electrical runs? If they are and they run parallel for any length this could be introducing the noise you are experiencing. Other than that, the cable could be the issue. Good luck, Paul.

    Acoustic treatment for basement HT

Hello Eric; You have a real problem with a square box. If the walls haven't been finished yet you might want to consider changing the dimensions of the room to get away from the box problems. Other than that, Absorption on the top half of the room and diffusion on the bottom half is a...

How big is your dedicated Home Theater???

Mine is (Drywall is finally primed) almost 14' by 20'. First row seats 4 and second row seats 3. I have about 6 inches to the back wall. I used real theater seats for the back row. Good luck. Paul.

    Roxul Acoustical batting Users...

I just finished insulating my HT with this product. I used 9 bundles of this in my ceiling and one wall. It was easier to use than fiberglass insulation. It is not as itchy. :D I would highly recommend that you use a mask of some sort when you install any type of insulation. My only issue...

How Do I Build A Room Within A Room?

If you have the space to do a room within a room thats great. If you don't then do a staggered stud wall. You still get separation of the room and there is only a physical connection at the top and bottom plates. Instead of using two sheets of drywall on the theater side of the wall use 5/8"...

What is "in wall" rated speaker wire?

In-wall rated speaker wire willl have an extra jacket around it. This jacket is fire rated so that the speaker wire will not act like a fuse in case of a fire. The larger hardware stores should have a fairly inexpensive in-wall speaker wire. The place I got mine had the same price as the...

    Rear component access

I was lucky enought to have a hallway behind my cabinet so I put in a door. It allows great access to the back of the cabinet and I don't have to move gear in and out to check on wiring. Paul.

    House under construction

Having an ethernet port near your receiver is a great idea. You never know when your multimedia server will be setup. :) FYI. Low voltage wire should never run parallel to regular electrical runs unless it is about 2' away. If you HAVE to run a low voltage line parallel to a regular line and...

New construction - phew! Where do I begin!

I used Belden 1695A instead of the 1694A. It almost the same but is much cheaper. At least it was where I am located. Good luck. Paul.

Voices coming from my new sub

I built a 155L Shiva with the same PE250 W plate amp and have the same problem. I replaced the sub with a PSB Subsonic 7 and didn't hear any voices. It's too bad I had to give my brother his Subsonic back. After reading the responses to the initial question I believe Thomas is right, in that...

Building my first house! What should I do for a home theater room + other questions

Great advice so far. I guess I can throw in my .02 cents. Make sure you use electrical conduit. It has a softer corner so that cable does not bind. Using real PVC will give you a 90 degree corner that cable will get stuck in. Do as much pre-wire as you can and then run the conduit. It is...

    Cables - Which?

The other thing you can do is to install conduit from the approximate location of the projector to your equipment area. This would be on top of any cabling you install. In other words, don't let the electrician use it for any cables he is installing. :D Make sure it is at least 2". I also ran...

    Staggered Studding

I would think that having soft walls would introduce problems as it would absorb certain frequencies but you wouldn't know which ones. IMHO, hard walls are better. Build the room and then treat problematic frequencies. That's just my .02 which isn't a lot these days. :D Paul.

    In-wall wiring and interference question

Here are some general guidlines: 1) If you have to cross an electrical line then do it at 90 degrees. 2) There is no harm in running speaker/video/telephone cable in the same run. 3) Try and stay at 1' away from electrical runs if you can. I am not sure on the distance it might have...

    Having home built - questions.

When the conduit is installed just make sure that they bring it to the center of the room and then straight to the back or front of the room. This way, you have a long straight run down the center of the room so that no matter where your projector sits you can just cut a hole in the ceiling and...

    New Home Wiring

Patrick; I was in the same dilema about 6 months ago. Our new home was completed in Dec 2002. Here is what I did. 1) Placed all components in one stereo cabinet in the future dedicated home theater(basement). I ran all required speaker wire for an ht in the living room with in ceiling...

Which Radio Shack SPL Meter Is Better?

As stated, the digital one is great for subwoofer calibration because of the averaging ability. The analog meter has 10th's of a db whereas the digital one rounds to the nearest db. This means that the analog meter is more accurate than the digital meter. I purchased the analog meter for two...

Is buying a decent digital coaxial interconnect worth it?

Yup; You can use digital IC's for analog but not recommended the other way around. The reason is that analog IC's do not typically use 75 ohm cable. Good luck. Paul.
