Rahman was on tour in US and performed in NY yesterday?!?? Too bad I didn't know about this...I've been a casual fan after watching some movies directed by Mani Rathnam that he scored and the songs in "Lagaan" were great.
Watch LISA AND THE DEVIL first as that is Mario Bava's original version. It's WAY better than HOUSE OF EXORCISM and makes better sense (though some people actually felt otherwise). Then see HOUSE and see how LISA is butchered by the producer to cash in on the Exorcist wave after LISA failed to...
Luhrman's doing Puccini's La Boheme in modern settings and in English. There was an article on it in the NY Times aorund Oscars time but I can't find it on the website.
Do you have the Anchor Bay release? The subtitles on the AB disc are optional.
It's not as impressive as Le Samouraï but Un Flic is very good, especially if you like moody police procedurals though it's too dragged out in some spots. The opening bank robbery is detailed and tense and another...
I know that many people on this thread has mentioned these already but let me give more recommendations on the Mani Ratnam movies: Bombay and Dil Se are really great and very moving. Not only are they entertaining with good songs and storylines but they also stirred very strong emotions...
Note to others: The review Steve posted is a good one but it got too many spoilers (all the reviews at the site by Keith Allison are like this so readers beware). Stop reading with the paragraph "While in town one day, On and Iron Head..." and continue reading at the last 2 paragraphs that start...
A Real Young Girl is anamorphic and the pan & scanned option also works. The transfer is very good and, from the ~20 mintues that I've watched, there's no digital enhancements. It's still grainy and soft just like the theatrical print. My only complaint was that the sound volume was set too low...
This problem shows up on my 2 Pioneer players as well. I've also spotted another glitch as well: there's some pixellation around 62:48. Has anyone also seen this? I'm not sure if this is a problem with my disc or not but it doesn't have any scratches on it.
At around 1:40 at the end of the opening credits, there's a one-second sound dropout. This happened on my two Pioneer players: DV-414 and DV-525. Has anyone else has this same problem? If you did, did exchanging for a new copy fix this problem?
I didn't care for it when I saw it in the theater, but, after watching this 2 times on disc, I think it's very good though not without major flaws. (Those opinions on the previous thread were way too harsh and critical. At least they can admit that it wasn't boring...) It's successful both as...
Cimino's still around and have plans for a new movie. From this article in The Guardian on 12/6, he's going to do an adaptation of André Malraux's La Condition Humaine (Man's Fate) about "a communist uprising in Shanghai" that's going to be a production of "gigantic scale". His new novel "Big...
Thanks for the review, Steve. I've been thinking of getting this for a while but I haven't since I can't find reviews of it and I wasn't quite sure of the transfer quality, etc. Now I'll put this one on my long "to buy" list.
I can't wait for this disc...it's definitely the most underrated De Palma and Vietnam movie since no one knew that he, always considered the Hitchcock ripoff, can make something so personal, powerful, and memorable. It's a great release to end "the year of De Palma" as so much of his major works...
This was the second Argento I saw (SUSPIRIA was the first) and my personal favorite for those same reasons, even if the plot doesn't make any logical sense plus all those flies and the monkey. I've found it amusing that some Argento fans disliked it because of those "defects" as if SUSPIRIA is...
There's a review of it at Midnight Eye, which got tons of reviews of lesser known but worthwhile recent Japanese movies. They also have a Seijun Suzuki's career overview and an interview. The movie is still being shown around Japan in limited roadshow engagement.
Trailer from the official site...
The good but not great transfer IS indeed too soft compared to the new print I saw at the De Palma retro in the American Museum of the Moving Image. Everything was surprisingly sharp and clear in every scene with not much graininess present, including the night sound-recording scene...
Greg,
SWEET MOVIE and many other Makavejev's films (including WR: MYSTERIES OF THE ORGANISM) are available from Facets Multimedia in Chicago on tapes (around $25 each). Back then we folks in NY can get this and SALO on tape from the NY Public Library system and most of the circulating copies of...
Here's a couple more foreign films to add to the list:
The Emigrants (1971) and
The New Land (1972)
Jan Troell's epic saga (with Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow) traces a peasant family's life from rural Sweden to Minnesota in the 19th century. Only The Emigrants is currently available on video...
