    Digitial Video Recording

Panasonic has some nice, inexpensive 3 CCD (better color than single chip models) videocams that offer very good video quality and are in the $500 to 700 or so range. As with any reviews, take them with a grain of salt, but I think this place does a nice job: Camcorder Info Look for the GS120...

Weird. My New Bela Fleck DVD-A is a CD.

I have a bona fide DVD-A which came in a special jewel case. Sounds great, although I know some puists don't care for the experience of being in the center of the surround mix. Jim

What firewire cable Sony to Panasonic E60?

You are correct, sir. Any will do, but this retractable is not too expensive and is easy to stash when not in use: Linq retractable

    Good universal remote?

A big advantage with the URC-8811 (or similar) package with JP1 programmability is the ability for you to add 'discrete codes' in particular power-on and power-off (not just power toggle), which many devices, such as DVD players and TV sets, can understand, but are not programmed into the...

    $58 DVD player at Radio Shack with Region-Free hack...plus $10 mail-in rebate!

This unit only passes the DTS signal, not decode it. Even most inexpensive receivers these days have DTS decoders though. I'd still be interested in others' experience with the component video output with their units. Mine is really poor. S-Video is good though.

    $58 DVD player at Radio Shack with Region-Free hack...plus $10 mail-in rebate!

I was using cheap component cables that came with another device. You're right that the Cyberhome doesn't come with component cables. Anyway, if anyone's still hunting for this unit, it's available without rebate for $59 here.

    Alison Krauss Concert DVD

What I think is the deal is that for some reason unbeknownst to me, there are two types of packaging for these DVD discs. One is the regular DVD keepcase (like an Amray), and the other is a jewel box, like an audio CD. For some reason the jewel case version is about $5.00 more, even though the...

    iPod or Nomad Zen?

John-M, I believe you'll need USB 2.0 or Firewire. Cards are pretty inexpensive, and there are some combo cards as well from what I recall. I think it needs to be the 6 pin firewire connector, but don't know for sure. iPod specs BTW, check out ipodlounge.com for a wealth of info on the ipod...

    Alison Krauss Concert DVD

Chris, Unfortunately there's no mention that Outlaw ships their products to Fiji, or anywhere else outside of North America. You may be able to get an ICBM off eBay or Audiogon however. A pre/pro would be another choice. Big selling points for the Outlaw 950 pre/pro are not only its...

    Alison Krauss Concert DVD

Don't know much about this player, but it does seem to have implemented bass management in a less than ideal manner according to a recent review. The ICBM is a recommended accessory if you don't have true full range speakers all around. Jim

    Alison Krauss Concert DVD

Chris, Bass management is a weak point with many systems when it comes to SACD or DVD-A. Are you able to calibrate the subwoofer using the analog setup? One useful calibration disc for SACD/DVD-A is the Chesky Ultimate Surround DVD which is designed for this. Jim

    Alison Krauss Concert DVD

Chris, Need more details to try to figure out what the problem is. I suspect that it's how you set up your system. SACDs don't have a dedicated subwoofer channel like most DVDs have. You need to set up the bass management on the SACD player carefully to get the best sound, including calibrating...

    iPod or Nomad Zen?

John, I haven't used them but there are some other programs, such as EphPod, that will let you manage your music files and contacts. Go to versiontracker.com to get the latest version (search for ipod after selecting the Windows tab). There will be a Windows version of iTunes later in the year...

    iPod or Nomad Zen?

John, If you're not able to find this through Dell, check out dealmac.com and search for ipod for various deals. Unfortunately the Apple store seems to be out of the refurbed ipods which were a real bargain. I suspect they've also been depleted at BB and CC or your local electronics B&M. BTW...

    iPod or Nomad Zen?

One of the most useful features of the iPod is it's ability to be used as a spare Firewire hard drive. In addition the the elegance and ease of use on a Mac (with iTunes to boot), it's a breeze to use as a hard drive. It can also automatically sync files, address books and calendar reminders...

    $58 DVD player at Radio Shack with Region-Free hack...plus $10 mail-in rebate!

Which cables did you use? I've found the cheap component cables included with the unit to be really awful and give washed out to colorless playback. However, even with primo cables, although I did get color it was much worse than the S-Video output. I kinda suspect this is a design flaw with...

    $58 DVD player at Radio Shack with Region-Free hack...plus $10 mail-in rebate!

Hi Bob, Adjusting the contrast, brightness and saturation definitely helped, but did not remedy the situation. I tried some pretty good IXOS component cables but that didn't do the trick. I'm kind of waffling at the moment about getting a replacement due to inertia and I had already cut out the...

    Desert Island Discs (DIDs)

Phil, I hope you also remembered the power generator for the desert Isle :D Re: bass players, don't overlook Victor Wooten, and Edgar Meyer (granted probably not the type of bass player you're thinking of). In case not mentioned: Eva Cassidy: Eva by heart, Live at Blues Alley...

    $58 DVD player at Radio Shack with Region-Free hack...plus $10 mail-in rebate!

Has anyone else tried the progressive output with this player? With a variety of cables the progressive video output is oversaturated and has a very yellow overall tinge. The S-video is much better as far as color. Any similar experience?

Q about Norah Jones SACD - does this happen to you?

Hi Javier, I think I know what you're talking about. I actually think it's worse on the Redbook CD, where at several places (the loudest passages), I think the mic is clipping and the sound is distorted as well as loud. It's better on the SACD. I wonder if it is something we'll have to live...

    $58 DVD player at Radio Shack with Region-Free hack...plus $10 mail-in rebate!

Hi Greg, I'll let you know if the shimmering goes away after I've played with it for a while. For now, it seems to be disc specific. Compared to my Panny RP-91 the player seems to put out less saturated color, although it could be the cables. I've ordered some new ones to go with the DVD...

    $58 DVD player at Radio Shack with Region-Free hack...plus $10 mail-in rebate!

Hi Tony, I had the shimmering on the bottom with Sting's "All this time" and the dts/video choppiness problem with Peter Gabriel's "Secret World". Haven't had time to do extensive testing and right now don't have any non-region 1 discs. So far all the movies I've tried play back fine, including...

Hi Tony, Thanks! I didn't realize I had to push enter first to enable changing the region code. Now just have to get my hands on some nether-region DVDs. By the way, for previous posters, I did get a warranty sheet that says there's a 3 month warranty for labor, and 1 year for parts. Receipt...

    $58 DVD player at Radio Shack with Region-Free hack...plus $10 mail-in rebate!

Hi, Just picked up one of these from my local RS. I tried the region code setup and can''t change it from the default region 1 . The system software date is 20030320 if that makes any difference. While it plays DD 5.1 OK, my unit skipped incessantly when I played the Peter Gabriel...

    Panasonic DVD recorder questions

Hi Scott, I realized after posting the RP-91 only has digital audio out not digital video . Thanks for elaborating. I too wondered why the E80 doesn't have Firewire in. But then I also don't know why they took the Faroudja chip out of their DVD players. Jim

    Panasonic DVD recorder questions

So Earnest, I think this would work, but just to be sure, I have a Panny RP-91 that is said to be able to read DVD-RAM discs. Will I be able to make digital copies of an edited DVD-RAM onto DVD-R via the RP-91 onto a DMR-E60 I have on order from PC/MacMall (good price, but on backorder)? Thx Jim

    Reference-quality Bluegrass Recordings?

Not exactly bluegrass, but both Bela Fleck and Jerry Douglas have audiophile recordings on the Water Lily Acoustics label, both available as redbook CDs and also as SACDs. I particularly like Fleck's Tabula Rasa. I second the nomination of the DVD-A version of Bela's Tales of the Acoustic...

Future Amp upgrades for $1500 or less

As mentioned, the Outlaw 950 is the least expensive pre/pro out there, and the new version seems to have the main bugs worked out (I'm happy with my 'red dot' version). Outlaw is coming out with an economy 7 channel amp. The whole package can be had for $1700 (US). Their cables are nice, so...
