Oh my god, no. This is absolutely intentional. It's one of my favorite cuts in the whole film. I still remember seeing that cut in a dark theater way back in 1982 and kind of snapping to attention. Like, "Oh, it's going to be that kind of movie." I love it.
Of course you're absolutely right...
Hi, all. I've taken a look at existing discussions but I'm asking for a friend and he has a couple of specific requirements that seemed to make it worth starting a new thread. To wit:
1. That it's as slim as possible, height-wise, due to space constraints, and ...
2. That I can view discs via...
I'm researching what's turning out to be a particularly difficult HDTV purchase for a friend (he requires coax audio out, and there just aren't that many attractive models offering that feature this year -- he nixed the Samsung 7 Series based on the glossy screen and reviewers' concerns about...
Just saw Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Lovely movie. Should make a fine Blu-ray release (assuming TWC has its act together and puts it out), but I can't imagine wanting to sit through it in standard-def after seeing a nice theatrical presentation. (And for what it's worth I didn't once even think...
Gordon Willis? Sven Nykvist? If you ask me, any movie worth seeing is worth seeing in HD. But movies shot by these guys especially. I know there's this commonly held idea that "intimate" movies don't necessarily need HD, but I disagree. In fact, I'd argue that the opposite is true. We need...
Yes, my knowledge of the whole process is a few years out of date. When I was following the business closely, replicators were still tending to grouse a bit about taking delivery of content on DVD-R, but it sure simplified matters for the folks making the disc. The other thing that's changing...
I think you're misplacing the DLT in the process -- typically the movie would be delivered to the authoring house (sometimes called a compression-and-authoring house) on a D-5 videotape. The authoring house would then add interactivity to the program, including various special features and...
Structurally, it's true, Blu-ray and HD-DVD are very different technologies. And economically, it's true, the real impetus behind a "format war" like this one isn't the best interests of consumers or even of Hollywood but rather of the companies that get to collect dimes, nickels and pennies in...
My thought is that I need to take my old copies of Happy Together and Fallen Angels to eBay, like, post-haste. (This will make the third copy of Happy Together I've bought, including the original HK DVD release.) -bf-
It's possible that a video like "Hella Good" doesn't even exist at a higher resolution. I don't have any specific knowledge of this project, but a lot of music videos are going to be finished and delivered from the post facility at SD resolution (letterboxed in this case), and that's just how...
Anyone know what the deal is with this player and some new DVD-Audio titles from Warner, Rhino, Universal? A friend says he can't play Neil Young's Greendale, Brian Wilson's Live at the Roxy, T. Rex's Electric Warrior or Steely Dan's Gaucho and says he hears something about a firmware update...
I dunno, man. With even John Lowry himself recently admitting (in The New York Times, wasn't it?) that technique has improved enough in the last couple of years that he'd like to have another go at Citizen Kane, I have to wonder how long it makes sense to put off major DVD releases in the hope...
[raises hand] I'd spend the money on the boxed set if it included a correct version of the film. Instead, I'm just watching my laserdisc. Little things like this really bother me on films that I know well. The ruined subtitles on Annie Hall, for instance, make me cringe. For a longtime...
No, I'd say there's no chance of changing the box at this point. If the set drops in early December, it's no doubt already at replication. It may already be in warehouses. Fincher history buffs can hope, I guess, that the complete docu shows up in discs earmarked for some other territory...
I wouldn't worry about this interim standard being the second coming of Divx. Sure, there might be a studio or two that plays around with the idea of putting some compelling content on a disc that has to be "unlocked" via credit card, but the lack of consumer enthusiasm for such a gimmick will...
I'm seconding Charlie's kudos for the presentation of these discs. The books are 52 pages, squarebound, with all kinds of cool material on the inside. The DVD cases are extra-thick so they can handle the larger books. And the material on the DVDs themselves is pretty terrific. Talk about great...
What I want to know is whether anyone's tracked down a complete list of contents for each of these three discs. Palm's Web site doesn't even have them! Sheesh. -bf-
Jon, I get the feeling Brakhage would have enjoyed hearing that story. As impatient as he could occasionally get, he seemed to always have time for babies! (Aside from any connections between closed-eye vision and collective human consciousness and the state of mind of an infant etc etc etc.)...
I'm just happy to see people getting so agitated over the relatively subtle issues of color timing for a new release of a great horror film. I don't mean this sarcastically -- it's actually heartening to me to see that people are so concerned, and take the welfare of the original imagery so...
Thanks, Lyle_JP, for the most thoughtful comments I've seen to date on this particular release. I'm still not entirely convinced of the rightness of this transfer -- I remember some pretty striking colors in the film print of Halloween that I saw -- but I guess I'll give the DVD a chance...
I'm sympathetic to Landis's concerns, and I say more power to him. I wouldn't say it's a question of "degrading" the transfer as much as it is trying to preserve the proper look. What is commonly thought of as a dynamite DVD transfer has often been tweaked to play to the strengths of the medium...
No, Ivy Hill was purchased by Cinram as part of a package with WEA Manufacturing. My guess is the new six-year contract with Warner Home Video includes printing and packaging by Ivy Hill — thus ensuring a continued cash flow for this part of the business — but I'm not sure. -bf-
Given that the film is still in theaters, I'd say 5-7 months from now is a pretty safe bet. Look for it in the September-October time frame, maybe sooner. -bf-
Wings of Desire with deleted scenes and an audio commentary, no less. Looks like I can retire that pan-and-scan laserdisc I got from Columbia House once upon a time. Is this the third time La Femme Nikita has been released on DVD (in only six years!), or just the second? -bf-
