Some Fry's stores had this on sale recently for $199, but that's pretty much regional (they're in Texas, and along the West coast I believe). As a starter system, it's pretty decent.
If you're looking for a multidisc changed for that many discs, and something that does SACD, your only choice is probably the Sony AFAIK. I think they have a regular sony model for $400, and and ES model which should be better.
Best Buy's only been carrying Athena for a year, in my opinion it diminishes the brand somewhat, since Best Buy doesn't really carry a lot of great speakers in general (i'm sure there are a few exceptions to this). I hope API has a mass retailer lined up to carry Athena. I personally don't...
You'll probably be happy either way, but will always second guess your purchase. If you're like many of us here, you'll probably upgrade/try something else in a few years anyway. That's a killer deal on the F1s, I think the F2s are almost twice as much, and i'm not sure if Best Buy is going...
Does anyone know for sure what the future of Athena at Best Buy will be? I'm wondering if they're just getting rid of the current models, or if they'll be discontinuing Athena altogether.
Eddie i've got the Onkyo 600, maybe it was just my ears, but when I A/B'd some speakers a while back, whatever was on the B set of speakers would sound worse. Bi-wiring won't get you much, but b-amping might. I'd second the recommendation for the Athenas. They're made by the same company that...
I'd agree with Nick, if you're on a budget don't try to buy 5 matching speakers. I'd rather get 2 good ones, and in a few months get a good center channel, you can do the rears later. Polk has some good speakers priced low, i'm not sure where you live but Tweeter and Fry's have had some sales...
Glad to hear you like the OM-9s Lee. I'm thoroughly enjoying them, and i'm still amazed by them. I went from floorstanders (FRx-5s) to bookshelves (Omni 60s)to get the omnipolar sound, and even though I loved the wide-soundstage, it always sounded like something was missing. The OM-9s sound...
Check out the entry level Onkyos, they may also fit your budget. The digital Kenwoods are nice, especially with digital inputs, but I don't think they have 5.1 inputs for DVD-Audio either.
BestBuy.com has the AS-F1s at a super low price. Not as good as the F2s but for the price you can't really complain. If you don't like them, return them. If you're already listened to the F2s and have your heart set on them you could probably get them from Audio Advisor. I'm not advertising for...
There's been a lot of fussing over the XR70 as well, but no word on if it's a major step up from the XR50 or not. Many people seem to have noticed that the digital receivers sound better with speakers that have a higher impedance (8 ohm) instead of lower (4 ohm).
I've had the Omni 60s for about a year, after deciding to replace a pair of FRx-5s (as the name implies, they were front radiating). I liked the OmniPolar sound, but the Omni 60s up front sounded a little too sharp for me. Even though the woofer was 6.5", and I have a sub, it felt like I was...
Let me know if you ever try that out Kevin, I was toying with going to the Veritas series a while ago, and got a great deal on the OM-9s (which I was admiring for some time, I just an excuse to pull the trigger!). Do you prefer the Omni 60s over the OM-9s? I've been toying with the idea of...
