*** Official "GANGS OF NEW YORK" Discussion Thread

After digesting the film a bit further, I think I'm respecting it a bit more. I still want to see Scorsese's final cut which supposedly exits on videotape at least. Maybe some day ala Apocalypse Now Redux, it will see the light of day. Until then, scour all those big city indy video stores. This...

*** Official "GANGS OF NEW YORK" Discussion Thread

Spoilers.... The film did lose it's focus after the Chinese dinner theater betrayal scene (I'm not sure how else to describe it). Gangs of New York worked on the simple premise of a revenge thriller much better IMO. After the cat was out of the bag and Bill let Amsterdam off the 'hook' AGAIN...

R.E.M.'s "Document" coming to DVD-audio on Jan. 28th

Has anyone compared the AFTP DVD-A to the LP. I have the LP and find that it beats the CD on everything except slam and a little swagger. The thing is AFTP is a quiet album (though Stipe says it's punk), so slam and swagger shouldn't be an issue. Monster and Reveal are both poorly mastered on CD...

Is SACD just a vehicle to price-gouge audio ethusiasts?

Regarding market growth: I read somewhere that vinyl, as miniscule as it is still out sells both SACD and DVD-A. I agree on the surface that Audiophiles, much like other expensive hobbies (ie stamp collectors) caters to the snobby, elitist crowd. However bubbling underneath that surface there...

Anyone want to quit smoking with me? (second try)

Feb. 14 2002 (yes my valentine to myself) Though I've cheated on several occassions since by bumming a cigarette, I haven't actually bought a pack. Smoking can be an enjoyable social activity like drinking but never let it dominate you and turn into the addictive crutch that it really is.

    Tom Brokaw retiring in '04

I lost any respect for Brokaw after a report he did within Iraq a couple of months ago. He was interviewing clean cut Iraqi college grads (I'm curious about their education system. Let's see, Bioterrorisim 101, Dictatorism 101, Hate Crime 101, Black mail and Bribery 101...I could go on but I...

Digital Cinema on 35mm: And you thought Super35 was bad.....

Scott, you seem to know what you're talking about. I am a bit confused as to why the spherical lenses used on the the Sony HDcam were so large (if this is the case). Part of the benefit of shooting spherical rather than anamorphic is for the more compact camera (mobile) size and better light...

Life as a House DVD- 2:1 aspect ratio

Tucker and Apocalypse Now look bad re-formatted, especially Tucker. There is some actual P&S in Tucker in several scenes. I actually prefer 2.1 as a shooting ratio. Unfortunately there are no screens or cameras capable of handling this ration.

Digital Cinema on 35mm: And you thought Super35 was bad.....

I was unimpressed early on with scenes in Padme's apartment. As others have stated, parts were grainy and flat looking with a lot of digital noise. Not sure if it's true or not but Harry over at AICN stated that Lucas blew up a few shots from this sequence (original wide shot to close-up). I...

Ebert on 2001 70mm showing in Chicago

Jack, I think it's because 2001 is for all intents and purposes considered a 'cult' film by the studios. There aren't enough IMAX or Cinerama theaters (they way it needs to be seen!!) around to promote the spending needed to promote the film. Besides the studio heads now see 2001 as passe', it...

Ebert on 2001 70mm showing in Chicago

Actually I saw a 70mm print of 2001 at the IMAX at the Navy Pier about seven years ago. It is true that you cannot fully appreciate this film until you've seen it presented this way. Nothing against the Music Box for it is a great little 'art house' theater but it cannot hold a candle to the...

    *** Official Post-Oscar Discussion Thread

I'm sorry if no one got the sarcasm in the last post. Perhaps I went too far with the Opie comment. I dunno. The uptight feeling though on these boards towards someone with a differing opinion is a bit frustrating. True my comments may come off a bit gruff and perhaps idiotic (poorly worded)...
