There can be a difference. Look for a low gauge number for the wire used inside. Personally, I use BlueJeansCables for all my interconnects. Their prices are hard to beat. The 7ft HDMI cable I just got from them was under 30 bucks shipped. Very well constructed cable, using 24 gauge wires...
APC is coming out with their UPS units for HT. Though a bit pricey. They offer voltage regulation and filtering as well. I'm opting for the non-UPS version just for the voltage regulation. APC AV
The 'free flowing' cable inside is for the ground shield. It should probably be hooked up at the turntable ground, since you said it shows no continuity back to the RCA connector. Should help reduce induced noise.
John, I think you meant to say run your sub in series with the mains, using the speaker level inputs and outputs. He should contact Velodyne and verify the setup he is trying to use. Most plate amps I believe use a seperate crossover for the speaker level connections, non-adjustable.
John, You're correct. Though the SOS is easy for ANYONE to use. It's also extremely small. Don't forget to add the cost of a new microphone to that BFD, and some measuring software, as well as a PC to run it.
