Pre-processor with balanced XLR outputs for mains

I have a 5.1 system that I have not touched for a few years. Added a PS3 for Blu-ray (love the PS3) and alas the optical input appears to be dead in my Classe ssp-50 pre-processor. I have no other way to get the signal to the pre-pro. The Classe has a completely separate pre-amp for 2 channel...

    What Speakers Do You Own?

HT: Martin Logan reQuests (L/R) Martin Logan Cinema (C) B&W 300's (rear) twin SVS 16-46's Cottage: Sony HTIB under the tree for the kids Xmas 2005 (and we'll see how long I'm satisfied with that! But shit, its only going to get used 6-8 hrs/month)

Martin Logan Surround Setup plus A/V Receiver Advice Needed/ Opinions

You won't want to be running the ML's off of a receiver for very long. As much as I think the Marantz is a great receiver, I ruined my SR-8000 in a year trying to drive ReQuests as front speakers. If you try to drive ML's all around your receiver won't last very long. Sorry - its just a fact...

    Best Pre/Pro

Also consider two Canadian entries, the Bryston SP1.7 and and Classe SSP-75. For pure 2-channel performance along with good processor performance they're probably hard to beat. Larry

    Square room, TV in corner

I didn't want to put the sofa diagonally either, put two of them in an L shape, facing the two front walls.

Martin Logan Quest Z and reQuest, which sounds better?

Hi Seth, Glad to hear you are enjoying your reQuests. I've had a pair for about two years, bought them when they were discontinued. Similar sized room, 26' x 27' with 12' ceiling and they fill it well iff they have sufficient power. Bought a used Bryston 4BST to power them, big difference...

    Square room, TV in corner

Thanks Chu. Great post! I see that others are in the same boat as I. I have a room in the same configuration, about 26' x 25'. The position of windows and fireplace (and wife ;) necessitates putting the TV in the corner. I've positioned the rear speakers part way along the rear two walls and the...

2 Inches Does Matter (Speaker related REALLY)

Some speakers are more finicky than others. It took me a long, long time to get my Martin-Logan's positioned properly, but when I did the soundstage was amazing. I marked the spot on the floor with little masking tape hash marks. A week later I noticed the cleaning lady had moved the speakers...

    Samson Amps

I tried using a Samson 700 to drive my Martin-Logans. I was not at all impressed with the sound I got, my receiver was far better. Its an inexpensive amp, but there's no free lunch. Confine it to sub duty. Larry

And then there were 5....(amp decision)

Wanted to comment on the Bryston and the Classe. I have bought both used, A Bryston 4B-ST and a Classe SSP50 pre-pro. The Bryston warranty is legendary. My Classe pre-pro arrived a month ago and the seller was less than honest in his assessment of its condition. It had a broken RCA jack on the...

    Martin Logans & SVS

I'm running a pair of reQuests with 16-46 PC's. I was originally running the Logan's off of a Marantz SR-8000 receiver. I wanted more bass for 2-channel music, I wondered what the switch was on the back of the reQuests to lower the bass level. Could not figure out who would use it. I...

    Direct vs Stereo modes

Generally direct mode bypasses all circuitry that alters the source signal. It produces a stero signal only from the source signal. It bypasses level, tone controls, bass management, etc. The resulting sound is much cleaner in my case (with a Marantz receiver).

Help - Classe SSP-50 - problem with DTS source?

Thanks for the ideas guys. But the DVD player worked with my Marantz receiver. It is (still) set to output a DTS signal. I've already emailed Armin at Classe customer service, will call him when I get a chance. Thought I would see if you folks had any ideas, in parallel. Larry

Amps on top or bottom...now you know :)

So, all I want to know, being one that goes to great lengths to get good sound - is when should I stop digging!!! ;) Larry

Preamp Output on Marantz not playing?

I have an SR-8000, was using it as a pre-amp for a Bryston 4B-ST. I even drove the main speakers off the SR-8000 and routed the left/right pre-out to an external crossover to drive a subwoofer, with no problem. So obviously you are attempting something that is common practice. I do know...
