Press Release Warner Archive Collection Press Release: The Boob (1926) and Why Be Good (1929) (Blu-ray Double Feature)

A rather odd pair of silent titles for WAC to release on blu-ray, considering that nearly all the true landmark MGM silent films have been on the blu back burner for years. One can only assume that perhaps Criterion has been allocated distribution of THE WIND, THE CROWD, STUDENT PRINCE, FLESH...

    Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Anna Christie -- in Blu-ray

I would even go so far to say, if you’re only planning to watch just one of the two versions of the film, go with the german, which today seems more resilient to the growing pains of early talkie technique; the director and performances seem more in tune with material, more naturalistic, and...

Top 10 discs to complete our collections

Lots of work here for Warner Archive: The Wind (1928) A Woman of Affairs (1928) The Merry Widow (1934) The Walking Dead (1936) Northwest Passage (1940) Journey into Fear (1942) The Horn Blows at Midnight (1945) The Cobweb (1955) Our Mother’s House (1967) White Hunter Black Heart (1990) (I...

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Tarzan the Ape Man -- in Blu-ray

TARZAN AND HIS MATE is certainly the most worthy of the sequels for blu-ray upgrade. Standardization began to sink in with TARZAN ESCAPES … altho there’s an irresistible legend surrounding that film regarding a last-minute trimming in 1936 to relieve family audiences the trauma of witnessing a...

Kino-Lorber Insider Announcement Thread (Read Guidelines Post #3)

My excitement is bubbling over for BACK FROM THE DEAD, which has been very high on my personal most-wanted list … which might seem odd considering it doesn’t always get the highest praise (ahem, Mr. Maltin) … but I have a real passion for b&w scope from this period, particularly with this genre...

Press Release SPHE Press Release: Columbia Classics 4k Ultra HD Collection: Volume 4

Judging from the various opinions coming in on these Columbia 4K sets, my own perspective on these releases will probably have some detractors …. but I think these Columbia sets are very welcome … diverse titles of individual merit (i.e. all reasonably good films which have their own fan-base)...

Press Release SPHE Press Release: Columbia Classics 4k Ultra HD Collection Volume 3 (4k UHD)

What impressed me about last year’s Columbia 4K set was the extra initiative in the supplements… for example bonus features of here-to-fore unreleased titles (who would have expected the elusive remake of IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT … and the rarely seen 1932 LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE was a surprise too)...

Press Release SPHE Press Release: Columbia Classics 4k Ultra HD Collection Volume 3 (4k UHD)

Looks like we won’t be getting a 4K Columbia Classics Vol. 4 this Christmas, and perhaps the series (which was becoming a holiday event for some collectors) may now be discontinued. Sony HAS released a few 4K titles this season, some of which may have been intended for a Vol. 4, like the now...

    UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Stalag 17 -- in 4k UHD

For me, the rerelease of classic titles in 4K is always welcome when a discernible difference can be seen, which happily Mr. Harris lets us know with his choice “few words”. Older titles seem to benefit most from the upgrade when the earlier blu-ray was published quite a few years ago, so that...

    Your top 5 Hitchcock films.

Psycho (I’ve seen this soooo many times) The Birds (more than any other, got me hooked on Hitch) Rear Window (once I start it, I can’t stop) Dial M for Murder (I love 3-D; Milland, Kelly, Williams, all perfect) Shadow of a Doubt (there’s a reason why he liked it so much) Honorable mentions: I...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Torn Curtain -- in 4k UHD

There was a Hitchcock documentary … it may have been part of the Biography series … which gave some insight into the mid-60s period at Universal. Hitchcock apparently tried to launch a project which was referred to as KALEIDOSCOPE FRENZY (unrelated to the subsequent FRENZY) which was a “new...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Torn Curtain -- in 4k UHD

Agree with Mr. Hough’s assessment that TORN CURTAIN still has much to admire, tho the one major drawback for me has always been the music score. Lots has been written about the unfortunate breakup with Herrmann … and we’ve all been spoiled by their near perfect work together in previous films...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Rope -- in 4k UHD

Actually UNDER CAPRICORN followed ROPE, using the long take concept in more integrated fashion. Love ROPE, looking forward to the 4K … also love CAPRICORN, tho alas that esteem not widely shared, except apparently by certain French critics (even somewhat dismissed by its creator)...

Press Release Warner Archive Collection Announcement: Tarzan, The Ape Man (1932) (Blu-ray)

This is SUCH good news! They’ve been hinting “there’s more Tarzan on the way” ever since Warner released several of the later ones on blu ray in 2019 … and finally here it is! And this initial MGM entry is such a magnificently photographed film. Like many buffs here, I first saw it on TV as...

Attention Deanna Durbin fans: That Certain Age (1938), Mad About Music (1938) and Nice Girl? (1941) are coming to Blu-ray!

I recall that Movies Unlimited offered a “Spring Parade” Dvd many years ago, but it was from one of their PD sources (not a Universal disc), so I never bothered getting it … but that may be the source for the post on YouTube (which doesn’t look tooo bad, compared to some of the other vintage...
