I have a 55" 4k Samsung in my bedroom. My main viewing TV is 2k and 3D capable so there's no incentive to upgrade discs. Frankly I don't see enough difference on a 55" set to upgrade unless I'm buying a title for the first time and it includes a BD disc.
I watched the blu-ray the other night but the film didn't hold up to my memory of it. It seemed as though a good two-thirds of the movie was exposition to get to the island, and the denouement was a throwaway.
I don't remember when I originally saw the film on TV although I was an adult at the time. I remembered it as a suspenseful 'B "monster is loose" sci-fi film, a feeling that was upheld when I watched the blu-ray. The original reviewer should review just what a 'B film is... and isn't.
I watched it last night and really loved it. Part of my enjoyment was from the charisma of the two stars and the able supporting cast. The 3D was outstanding. One "at you" shot literally had me ducking, but there were just enough of those type of shots for novelty and not that many as to be...
I was managing a theater that ran the film when it was released. I didn't like the film at all, and we lost a bundle on the engagement. At the time someone told me that Lucy's vocals were mixed with another singer's.

I can also confirm what has been reported: picture is side-by-side, and very soft, almost like a VHS tape. The 3D looks very good, but what a disappointment. Let's hope Universal does the right thing and offers replacements.
I'm not Mr. Harris, but I remember that the authoring of one of the DVD releases was terrible - all the scenes that were supposed to be in stygian blackness, with only faces illuminated, were artificially lightened to the point you could see halos surrounding the characters. I've seen the film...
I had the HD-DVD. It was poor quality, soft image, and I believe Robert Harris had stated that its source (and that for the first Blu-ray) was mastered at 720p. The newest blu-ray is terrific quality, like night and day compared to the previous releases.
I have the '54 version, "CBS Shower of Stars," which has music and some songs by Bernard Herrmann. It was originally broadcast in color, but a friend at CBS checked and apparently the color material doesn't survive. I loved this version as a child, and although it pales in comparison to the...
