PatrickS, If you do get the Sherbourn, be aware that it is VERY heavy (>80lbs). You may not want to put it directly on top of the H/K. It should be on a shelf that is well supported. The 5/1500A I believe is rack mountable (I have a 5/1500), but by your description, I'm guessing you will not...
Are you using the digital output of your DVD player into your receiver? It sounds like you are using the analog outs, which will only send ProLogic. The signal you are getting in 5.1 may be bleed from analog signal path. Just a thought. Chris
I'd second Guy's opinion; used is the way to go. Since you are looking at a budget, you should stick with 5.1. Since you will only be using 5.1, there are a lot of prior generation units of very good quality being sold cheap since people are upgrading to 6.1 and 7.1 formats. The Outlaw 1050 for...
The don't have to match. Some would say to use the JBL for all the fronts to keep a unified sound field up front. IN that case, but something cheaper in the back since they are not nearly as taxed. You won't notice what amp as long as it is reasonable (used NAD?). Another alternative is to...
I just saw a house where the owner had B&W Nautilus 802s placed directly in the 2 corners of a room (within 6" of either wall), and with a grand piano sitting directly in front, blocking one of the speakers. So a few questions came to mind and I thought the HTF might have fun debating them...
I'm sure I'm going to get flogged for suggesting this, but MP3ing a vinyl collection can be a good thing.
First off, here is a link regarding MP3 quality:

Be sure to scan the Myths section which covers many of the prior posts. Using Lame and the --r3mix parameter, I...
Sixth Ave Electronics on rte. 22 in NJ are terrible. The staff are pushy and not very knowledgeable. The equipment is poorly set up and listening is a joke. (Ported speakers less than an inch from the rear wall and the salesman thought I was nuts when I asked him to move them.) Bait and switch...
You also may consider the RX-V630 for the future flexibility of pre-outs for all channels. It will provide you a little future proofing, especially if you find the power inadequate after you bring it home. An external amp is a great upgrade step down the line. Chris
I've had a NAD 214 driving NHT SB-3s and was very satisfied. The NHTs are very precise and revealing, and also aren't very efficient. Without a decent amp, they would be very fatiguing to listen to. The NAD is smooth and has ample power to drive them without straining. Give 'em a listen. I...
I'll give a quick :emoji_thumbsup: thumbs :emoji_thumbsup: up to NAD. I've been using a NAD 214 for about 8 years almost continuously with no problems and great sound. I was looking to add 2 more to my collection to power my HT, but added a Sherbourn 5 channel instead. It sounds better, but has...
Cyrus, I guess if you read my past posts, then you have seen my reasons for the 630 vs. the 530/730 models here. Basically, I needed the pre-outs to handle a 2 channel separate amp (NAD 214) that I din't want to go to waste. As it turned out, the difference in sound from the onboard amps was...
I think the receiver sounds very good as a pre-amp for music. In another thread I described my results with the V630 and the need for separate amplification, at least with my inefficient speakers. I was surprised at how much improvement was made by utilizing those line-outs on the back! ;)...
Like John D, I think I may have to go back and re-explore the DSP programs. My early experiments were unsatisfying and so I wrote it off as a gimick. So let me ask a few questions of those who seem to use the DSP a lot, 1) I have a lower level Yamaha (RX-V630), is the DSP of the caliber of...
