For those curious, I eventually solved my issue... by upgrading to a new UHD player. I can't believe that the model I bought from Samsung a year ago was left unable to play new discs.
The problem is that it works fine on my other player, the 2017 model. I've contacted Samsung twice, and both times I've essentially been told with a shrug to hope for a software update.
My two cents for what it's worth:
As a standalone movie, I thought it was great. As the second installment of a planned trilogy, it was disappointing.
