When storing mine for the winter I fill the tank with gas, add a couple ounces of Stabil and unhook the battery. It's fired right up after sitting for a few months each of the two winters I've stored it that way.
You most deffinately will not get more than 40 on a 600cc super sport. Not sure of you experience level, but they can be pretty unforgiving to an unexperienced rider. The local Suzuki dealer has a sign on their GS500Fs that say they get over 50mpg. Not sure it it's true or not.

I've got one. It's great that I don't have to carry several devices. I can connect to my Exchange server at work for email. As a phone, it sucks. The volume is very low at it's lowest setting. Bluetooth support is pretty poor as well.
May have been bad gas. I ran it dry and filled up with 93 Octane from a different station and all seems to be well. The engine has a fairly high compression ratio (13.5:1) but Honda says it'll run fine on 87. I'll stick to the super to be on the safe side.
