Name the auteur (help with a Master's thesis)

Hi all, working on a thesis about copyright law and came across this little snippet from Jon Avner of Probstein & Weiner, an entertainment law firm based in New York City and Los Angeles. Does anyone know who the director is that he is talking about? Original found at Can I Show It's A...

Kino to bring METROPOLIS to Blu-Ray in 2009

I got to see the 2000 restoration in the theater last fall here in St. Louis. It was absolutely stunning - I don't see any reason why someone doing a decent mastering/compression job (not Kino's strong suit) for DVD or BR couldn't make the current restoration look incredible for home theater...

More Warner classics revealed as in the works for 2010-2012

LOL. First HTF chuckle I've had in awhile. Off topic, but wouldn't it be nice to see The Magnificent Ambersons accompany the Kane release. Right.

Isn't it about time for The African Queen?

Shabby. Not beat up and damaged, but faded and flat. I don't know the original look, but even if it was filmed with a 'Moby Dick'-like color scheme, it still looked not far from VHS quality. It will also depend on one's TCM source - DishNetwork compresses TCM to all hell, so saying the image...

Orson Welles DON QUIXOTE from Image, August 5

From one Welles fan to another, watch a few YouTube clips and save your money. It is terrible. Someone needs to put some money behind a decent edit or making-of documentary to make this material watchable. Good to see Welles material getting some kind of attention, but this is the last thing...

DVD Review HTF DVD REVIEW: The Ice Storm

I think that this film was rereleased by Criterion, not because it needed a new edition, but because it is quite an important film. I can't think of any other film that deals so elegantly with the estrangement and struggle of a revolutionary generation coming of age and having to deal with the...

"The Robe" and "Demetrius and the Gladiators" are now a wow!

Yeah, this is one of the funniest threads I've read in some time. I wonder what motivates someone to shill for a company this poorly? If Fox is giving a kickback I think they should rethink this position.

New restoration brings movie classics to life

Well said. It also seems that each time a person printed (or scanned) these films from original negatives it would always yield slightly different results in registration. Its hard for me to believe that there are naysayers to this practice. I wish the article would have said something...

How the Grinch Stole Xmas: 50th Anniversary - New transfer?

'plagued with mosquito noise' is putting it lightly. This is among the worst looking dvds I own (and I own The Quiet Man). I wanted to ask about this during the WB television chat but didn't get chosen to ask a question. This cartoon is in great need of a new transfer and some decent extra...

Warners to release 200 new classic titles in 2007

Its hard to believe THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS isn't available yet. The film elements their 'searching' for had better be darn good.

DVD Review HTF REVIEW: The Wild - Definitely NOT Recommended!!!

Yeah, this was the first time in ages I can remember sitting in a theater and being bored stiff. Family films shouldn't be torture for parents. How this thing even got greenlighted is beyond me. Lord knows we don't need any more CG zoo animal flicks for a decade or two.

    Superman artwork leaked??

i thought this was perhaps the worst dvd cover art i'd seen in quite some time. must have been done by the folks who designed the looney tunes golden collection boxes and menus (i know, different division... don't bother correcting me).
