Well, I guess my point is that something like 1019 could be had for under 400. But, if the 919 is more in your range, why not just buy a $20 hdmi switching box to go with it? And if it still lies out of your budget, perhaps waiting and saving would be more worth while than taking the plunge on...

Look at the pioneer line. start with the vsx-1019 and then work your way down. I'll bet a savvy buyer could find the 1019 for about 400 bucks, if not less. Pioneer makes really good stuff that, for their price points, are well appointed. good luck

my new pioneer gave me a similar error message (and it turned out to be correct)... but it noted on the MCACC screen that if I check and there was no phase error in hook-up to proceed and ignore the warning. ta

I would have that issue with my old blu ray set-up... although my blu ray player was connected via multichannel. The problem would come if I attempted to play a DVD (BD) disk and left the AVR on multichannel... it would give some pretty unpleasant sound. If however, I switched to the optical...

I agree with you... it's weird. Especially since I had success with my previous pioneer vsx-1016's MCACC. I ran it 3 times... all times I made sure there were no ambient noises present... no footsteps,etc. Each time, it completely took out the lows and mids. I am fairly content, however...

I ran the MCACC... which I had done the Pioneer VSX-1016 that this new unit is replacing. On the 1016, the MCACC calibration worked like a charm and I was really happy with it... but the calibration with this new, VSX-21THX, didn't have nearly the same out come. It ended up giving me a sound...

That's perfect... I needed a slap in the face. You answered my question and it makes sense. I guess the biggest difference is that the THX Movie mode isn't necessarily trying to squeeze 7.1 out of a native 5.1 audio track.... etc. From the way the manual reads, there are a lot of benefits...

not the multi-channel input... just the direct setting (as opposed to pure direct) for the hdmi audio input from the bd player.

On Pioneer Elites... can I apply the THX Movie mode to a DIRECT signal???? I was under the impression that I could add the THX Movie mode... just not any of the other processing modes. Thanks!

Right... my comment about the multi-channel input was more to do with my current set-up... not my new 21thx. I'll report back with the outcome. I'm pretty excited.

I have 7.1... I know many of the BD movies are only 5.1... are any of 7.1 processing modes good? Thanks!

So if I run it direct, then the MCACC calibrations will be applied still? That's the biggest frustration with running multi-channel... it by passes everything. By the way, when I run it in standard mode, I'll have the ability to select what processing I want? Correct?

Happy Holidays - I just got a new Elite VSX-21THX to replace an older pioneer AVR. I wanted it so I could avoid having my blu-ray player kick out the sound via multi-channel out... I don't want my AVR's bass management and speaker settings to be by passed. So, I have the VSX. I am confused...

Thanks for the reply. I have tried playing around with the settings in the BD speaker menu. They work "okay." But, in the end, I would rather have the receiver doing the bass management for the reasons I described. I guess you confirmed my suspicion.... HDMI will work the same or (probably)...
