Truffaut's Mississippi Mermaid is a lovely film, and goes to places viewers may not expect. That's one of its pleasures.
Anything released on Blu-ray by Francois Truffaut should be met with celebration, and Twilight Time's new Blu-ray gets a huge cheer from this quarter.
The only problem with the release comes from MGM, and the master that they've supplied to TT.
To my eye, it appears to be transferred from a dupe neg, and has a softish feel to it, along with the movement that one would expect from multiple analogue generations. Did I mention positive and negative dirt?
Colors are good, but not great. Basically, all image attributes are on the level of okay. Creating something better, may have necessitated a return to French elements, which may not have been readily available, or at least not at a price.
Although I must voice my displeasure with the quality, this film is so important, especially as part of the work left to us by Truffaut, that my recommendation is to overlook the problem, and to buy the disc.
A wonderful film, not to be confused with the also recently released Mississippi Burning, which is also from Twilight Time.
Mississippi Mermaid is basically about someone who attains a bride, that he's only known via the mail, and ends up with Catherine Deneuve. You've got to feel for these people.
