Wow! Finally! This will be the first John Sayles film released on blu-ray!
Unbelievable! Let's hope for a trend. He's one of the greats and should not be overlooked.

Can anyone shed light on the alleged music clearance issues this film had for home video? Is it still an issue?

Doubtful that this will include the original theatrical soundtrack. There were 4 songs replaced for all home video editions of the film.

I think it is safe to guess that any Olive reissues of Paramount titles previously released by Legend Films will be the exact same transfers without any changes or augmentations.

Though I am really hoping that Criterion will be able to pry away PHASE IV and include the recently discovered alternate ending that played at selected screenings over the last few years.

Olive's already putting out PHASE IV...hopefully they will incorporate the footage, including the alternate ending, that's been recently unearthed and restored by the Academy Film Archive and Paramount.

Read about it here:

Happy to report that I finally bought the Olive Blu-ray and it contains the original theatrical soundtrack. "Shout" is back in for "Surfin' Bird." "A Lover's Concerto" is back in for "Sweet Talkin' Guy." "A Hazy Shade of Winter" and "At the Zoo" are back in for "I Call Your Name" and "Do You Wanna Dance?"

I have to say that Paramount did a very commendable job when they replaced the songs for home video, in that they got period-specific, actual songs as stand-ins, rather than muzak or fake soundalikes, as Universal was wont to do on their "rescored" soundtracks for home video.

To further that point, about the care that went into the BABY IT'S YOU home video soundtrack: the Simon & Garfunkel tunes, that originally appeared in the film, are consecutive on the BOOKENDS LP, while the replacement tunes are consecutive on the Mamas and the Papas' LP, IF YOU CAN BELIEVE YOUR EYES AND EARS, to keep the consistency of the scene in which Jill (Rosanna Arquette) listens to the songs on her turntable in her dorm room.

I will actually keep my Legend DVD, alongside the Olive Blu-ray, for this reason.
