With an incredible background in comedy, and with Mel Brooks as its leader, Brooksfilms has created three very serious productions.
The Elephant Man - 1980
Frances - 1982
and
The Doctor and the Devils - 1985.
The film tells of a anatomy professor in early 19th century Edinburgh, who hires grave robbers to hasten his supply of subjects.
Directed by Freddie Francis, who made a successful move from director of photography to direction, and who also plied his craft to The Elephant Man, The Doctor and the Devils is a film with gothic undertones, that could easily have viewers believe they're watching a Hammer production.
A great cast is led by Timothy Dalton and Jonathan Pryce.
Scream Factory's new Blu-ray is a splendid affair, and I'm pleased to have the film available. An odd film, to be sure, but one worth the 90 minutes to view.
