I played a few of the special features, but after have so far been unable to get back to the main menu in order to watch the movie! Has anyone else run into this?

I have tried a second copy. I have unplugged and re-booted my player. I keep coming back to the special features menu and am unable to get back to the main menu, on 2 different machines. In other words, I CANNOT PLAY THIS FILM!!! First time for everything, I guess.

Whenever I hear that someone has gotten a second copy and it does the same thing, I immediately think it's a firmware issue. It's odd that it's happening on two players but when was the last time that you updated the firmware on your player(s)?

You might try cleaning the lens on your player. I've had a couple of films that wouldn't play or would freeze. I used the Philips laser lens cleaner and then the discs played fine.

As for "updating" firmware, if you have a region free player, updating may disable its region free capability so be careful.

On my PS3 the supplement plays and when it finishes the screen goes black, I see the play arrow in the lower left corner of the screen for 1 or 2 seconds and then the menu returns. Pressing the menu button during playback of the supplement returns the disc to the supplement menu. No problems.

I assume you can eject the disc and get back to the main menu that way. Not the optimal solution of course.

Yes, the firmware update seems to have done the trick. Thanks, everyone.

It's always best to ask the question BEFORE returning the disc - this wasn't the seller's (whomever it was) fault, although that was the assumption and hence the completely unnecessary return. I am sure this kind of thing happens every day thousands of times. It's rarely the disc's fault.

Another thing to try when discs fail to load is going into the setup menu and finding the "persistent storage" option which you should then make a habit of periodically clearing (every month).

And people with machines hard-wired for region change shouldn't worry about updating firmware. That can, I believe, only affect machines modded via software input ie a remote code. My Oppo is hard-wired using a solder-in conversion kit from Denmark and I've updated firmware a couple of times since.

How can I find out if my region free Samsung is hard wired? I don't have a remote code but do need do input the region code in for it to play blu rays from another region but for standard DVDs I don't have to do that as it plays all regions automatically.

Anthony there have been at least 2 firmware updates for Oppo 93 during 2011/12 one or both of which seemed to affect (in fact disables) the Danish Pro mod kit. The DK supplier had to eventually reissue a fimrwar upgrade just for the bloody Mod kit! I don't know what the story is for the 103. If you own a "virgin" 83 you have a very salebable item in pantry BTW. It can play things the others can't but enough said. I stopped doing firmware updates around 2010 when it also became apparent the these were disabling things like iso and flac playback. There' s enough internet snooping now by too many "Security" agencies let alone businesses. I have the live web function permanently off and I commend that step to others. I have never and never will use BD live for instance.

Absolutely, Bruce. The second copy I had was not the result of a return, but one I bought my brother for Christmas during the Criterion flash sale (he's a huge Fosse fan). I was afraid his would not play for him, and so unwrapped and tried it on my machines.

I did not update the firmware for my LG all-region player, only my domestic Panny 3-D player.

Yes, mine is indeed an 'antique' 83 so I guess I'm pretty fortunate! And here I was thinking I should consider updating to a later model...
