I have an opportunity to purchase last year's Pioneer SC-79 at a discounted price or pre-order the new Denon X5200W model for a slightly higher price. I am building a home theater this fall in my basement and have the option to install ceiling speakers for ATMOS. Appreciate your comments on what you would choose and why.

If Atmos is desired, then why even look at the SC79?I'd be more inclined to get either the Onk 3030 or the prepro. I don't think the 5200 provides enough power supply to run more than 5 of the 11 speakers. So you'd need 6 channels of exterior power. To be fair, the 3030 provides 10 amps for its 11. Enough, in my opinion for 9. Not 11.Keeping in mind I haven't seen the 5200 price yet and Marantz and Integra models aren't announced.

Thank you for the suggestions, I will check out the Onkyo line as well. My interpretation of the Denon 5200 specs says it will do 9 channels at 140 watts each (8 ohms), so confused by your comment of only have the ability to drive 5 speakers. Please explain.

9 x 140 (not usuing a calculator) is 1460 watts. Double that to 2920. That, in amps, is 26(???).It only pulls 6 off the wall. A mere 20 amps short. The average home circuit is 15. 20 if you spec it.

Even if Denon switched to class D.D are 75/80% efficient. So that 1460 grows to 1800, still only pulls 6 amps off the wall.

Didn't catch that the Denon only pulls 6 amps. The 3030 Onkyo pulls 10.7 amps so then it is almost twice as powerful even though it is rated 5 watts less per channel!

What do you think of the Marantz AV7702 mated with the MM8077?

Nevermind. Was confused with the 7701.Whether you get the 7702 or Onkyo, you'll get ridiculous quality.I'm not a proponent of auto eq though. Aud XT(whatever version they are on) means nothing to me.So far the AccuEQ that Onkyo came up with is getting decent reviews. The news will be next year once Onkyo starts melding Pioneer/Elite with Onkyo/Integra.
