I've had an Onkyo TX-NR609 for about two years now, and I had an interesting experience last night. I was watching a movie, when my receiver turned off; I assumed that I accidentally hit the power button the remote (I always keep it nearby, and I was shifting in my seat), so I turned it back on, and I saw a "check SP wire" message that I'd never seen before. Now, I have had a problem with one of my rear speakers coming loose within the last month or so, so I checked, and everything was in order, with all the speakers working fine. The rest of the movie played without incident.

It wasn't until later that I learned that the "check SP wire" usually comes on when the receiver goes into protect mode; however, I am fairly sure it never went into that mode (the LED never blinked, and, again, the movie played fine). I have since booted the receiver back up without the message showing. The only explanation I have for the message showing up in the first place is that my Blu-ray player was right in the middle of a movie when I turned it back on, something that's never been the case (I always turn the receiver on first, well before any disc ever starts playing). Am I in the clear, or should I be worried? Again, all the speaker wires are fine and not touching each other (I've had this set up for nearly 6 years, so there's no reason why the wires could suddenly touch each other anyway).

How loud were you listening?Protect mode only happens for one reason...Overrunning the power supply...which has two causes...Asking too much. Happens during a power brown out.I've, personally, never seen the "check SP wire" message. It is also possible an interior wire inside a speaker is coming loose.
