Cropped to 16x9, and I would have passed.


The Abyss was James Cameron's first film shot in Super-35. A 1.78:1 transfer would have more information on the bottom of the screen for non-effects sequences.

Channel 4 in the UK has shown it in high definition in the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio, it looked very good.

I no longer expect to see it on Blu-ray, or even in anamorphic format on any physical media.

I actually do think we'll see The Abyss on Blu-ray. 

It just won't be this year.

Hopefully, we'll see a release in another year or two. 

It all depends on when Cameron has the time to evaluate an HD transfer and give his notes.

Once he does that, it's pretty simple.  And they already have a fairly comprehensive set of extras, as we saw on the earlier laser and DVD.
