1. Jaws-Outstanding

2. 1941-VERY underrated, the closest we've gotten to Mad World in the last 30 years

3. Indiana Jones And the Last Crusade-smart casting of Connery makes this a winner

4. Schindler's List-good

5. Catch Me If You Can-entertaining film despite DiCraprio's wooden acting

6. Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom-darker tone makes for a good movie

7. Raiders Of The Lost Ark-overrated

8. Saving Private Ryan-first 30 minutes=Very Good The Rest(particularly Matt "Smiling Boy" Damon)=Not So Good

9. Hook-fine children's movie

10. Duel-intriguing suspense

11. Always-slow but sad love story

12. Twilight Zone: The Movie-Oooo! Kick The Can! Posted Image

13. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind-Oooo! First we make sounds then they make sounds! Oooo!

14. Jurassic Park-lowest-common denominator trash

15. The Lost World: Jurassic Park-insulting

16. E.T.-***CRAP***

A totally fallacious argument trotted out continuously on this forum to defend a director who doesn't need defending by bashing other people's opinion.
Couldn't have said it better myself, Brook. Spielberg is the most well-known, most popular and one of the most prolific directors in the world, and possibly that the world has ever seen. It is absurd to say he is "under rated" just because not everyone worships him.

Out of Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

The Terminal (2004)
Catch Me If You Can (2002)
Minority Report (2002) Own the DVD - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image1/2 Another surgically done Spielberg film with probably more visual style than serves it. there is a lot I like about it, but I still think he is not exactly the right director to take on the incredible darkness of Philip K Dick. Still, it's probably better than a lot of directors would have accomplished.
Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001) Own the DVD - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image The things many detractors gripe about are generally what I like most about this film. I love the fairy tale quality and ambiguous ending as well as the three radically different acts. I probably actually like this more than I would have had Kubrick made it.
Saving Private Ryan (1998) Own the DVD - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image1/2 A remarkable 120 minute movie. Unfortunately, it's 169 minutes. It doesn't matter how many people have also said that, it was my impression the first time I saw it, before I had read a single review. Cut a good chunk of the Spielberg fluff in the middle and it's one of the greatest movies ever made.
Amistad (1997)
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image1/2 More suited to what I think Spielberg should do. I liked it better than the original, actually.
Schindler's List (1993) Own the DVD - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image Saw it at least twice in the theater when it came out and thought it was one of the greatest films ever made. Bought the LD and then the DVD. After watching it for the first time in years when the DVD came out, I suddenly saw all those touches of improper levity Spielberg insists on injecting in his films and I actually started getting angry, and I virtually never get angry about any movie.
Jurassic Park (1993) Own the LD - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image It is what it is.
Hook (1991) - Posted Image1/2 Saw it in the theater and it made my butt hurt.
Always (1989) Own the DVD - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image1/2 My favorite Spielberg, because it his his "type" of story and I find it remarkably touching, despite the piece of plastic named Brad Johnson. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image the weakest of a fun series.
Empire of the Sun (1987)
The Color Purple (1985)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image Yeah, it's a lot of fun.
Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) (segment 2) - Seen it, but don't remember which segment it is.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) - Posted ImagePosted Image Almost my least favorite Spielberg. I just couldn't have cared less what happened to the stupid alien.
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image1/2 Lots of fun and a nice revisit of the old serials, but the truth is, I think Sky Captain is better.
1941 (1979) - I just don't remember it well enough to rate it
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) - Posted ImagePosted Image1/2
Jaws (1975) - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
The Sugarland Express (1974)
Savage (1973) (TV)
Something Evil (1972) (TV)
Duel (1971) (TV) - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Amblin - A+
09/07/2005
brand new gorgeous 35mm print

Wonderful film that says a lot about Spielberg. Amblin is a non-dialogue film about a male hitchhiker who runs into a female that takes him under her wing. Except he really is just a wanderer, he's not interested in any of the things she is interested in. He wants to continue playing the role of the child, he wants to maintain a pure joy in life and honestly doesn't care about the weed and sex that drive the female and others of his generation. Spielberg only gives us a moment to realize that he is playing a role, and that's when she is asleep on his chest as they ride (finally) in a car, it's the only time we see the guy drop the role of the simple goofy kid that he plays for everyone else, and it makes the girls' elegant and understanding departure all the more perfect.

Duel - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
European Version - 16mm

Good flick that's a bit too long actually. Proto Spielberg, very well constructed.

Sugarland Express - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
35mm

In many ways unlike any other Spielberg film, and at the same stamped with his visual style. Storywise this is interesting and effective, but not a favorite, I'd like to see it again sometime.
