I finally can support all these formats with the combination of my Rotel RSP-1098 and Denon 2900. I would like to give each of these formats a try, and was wondering what people currently consider "reference" recordings for each format? Genre is not important. I do have one HDCD which is Jewel, "Spirit" and I think that one sounds really good. I don't have any DVD-Audio discs or SACD discs, nor have I heard any in person. Thanks for your suggestions!

Too many to name:

DVDA - most of the AIX recordings are good. Try the Laurence Juber

SACD - Alison Krauss Live and The Red Rose Sampler are favorites.

HDCD - I don't really have a good suggestion here, maybe some of the JVCs.

Happy listening!!!

DVD-A: Fleetwood Mac-Rumours (if you like classic rock)
SACD: have to second Alison Krauss Live, probably the best recorded disc of any format I own
don't know any HDCDs offhand, don't have the capability

John Mellencamp's self-titled first album with Columbia came out in 2001. It's HDCD and sounds very good.

Howdy.

SACD - Prokofiev "Romeo & Juliet" on Telarc
(by far the best sounding SACDs are pure DSDs and most if not all Telarcs are such)

HDCD - Mike Oldfield "Incantations"

DVDA - Sorry; don't own a player yet

Cheers,
Doug

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions! Sounds like I definitely can't go wrong with the SACD of Alison Krauss. I'll be trying that and several other suggestions from this thread ... thanks all!

Chicago II on DVDA doesn't get mentioned often, but it sounds wonderful. Also Zephyr on AIX label (a capella songs from middle ages to present).
