Extending Sirius antenna cable??? (1 Viewer)

This would be for a home application using the Kenwood DT-7000S in whole house system. This house (not mine) is wired to the hilt with structured cabling (2 RG6, 2 Cat5, 2 Fiber...everywhere and most currently unused). I need to know if I can convert the SMB connector to RG6 (or Cat5) to run from the antenna location (on the Directv mast) to the wiring closet and then convert back to SMB to go into the tuner??? Buying the 50 ft extention is not an option since running new wires will be a problem (2 story house).

I don't see why RG6 wouldn't work, but I'm not sure what the maximum length could be and still work properly...any ideas are appreciated. I'm going over to the house now and will try to determine the length of the run today and I'll check back here late tonight for any responses.

Thank you. I registered at Sirius Backstage and posted my question there. Hopefully I'll get a response there. I also emailed Sirius support and I don't expect a good solution from them, but I figured I'd try???

I'm sure RG6 has the bandwidth, the difficult part will be adapting the SMB connector to something that I can terminate the RG6 with (RCA, F, BNC, etc) and then make some sort of convertor cable or find an adaptor to go from SMB to whatever type choosen???

I got an answer from Sirius tech support. They claim converting to RG6 won't be a problem but didn't offer anymore help then that. I've found the appropriate SMB to BNC adaptors, but I need to wait to buy them until I need some more stuff from Pasternack b/c they require a $100 min order and I can't find the adaptors anywhere else (I'm trying to get 1 of each of the following: SMB Jack to BNC Female, SMB plug to BMC Female). I could use any gender on the BNC side (this just changes how I terminate the RG6), but need both plug and jack for SMB.

I haven't done it yet. It's for a friend's house and he hasn't purchased his whole house audio equipment yet. I do plan to buy the parts from Pasternack when I need them. I've searched high and low and not found a better option on the connectors then these overpriced ones. It's the Kenwood antenna that came free with the tuner when Crutchfield was running a special, but given the choice I'd probably get the Terk just to have better mounting options.

BTW: At my new place (same hardware as the friend's) I receive the signal with the antenna sitting on top of my TV. This is on the 2nd floor of a 4 story mid-rise with reinforced concrete floors between every level (both floor and ceiling in my place) and 20 ft from any windows. I'm not sure why it's working but I've used it everyday for the past week and I get no dropouts. So you might just try it indoors first???

hey guys, this site, XM Satellite Radio at MyRadioStore - All Things XM is pretty good for getting what you need for satellite radio. my house has a fair amount of structured wiring in it and i've been wanting to do the same as what you're talking about.

so far my plan (when i get the free cash..haha) will be to get the dual xm and sirius house antenna. this will run on rg6 cable which i'll run down to my homerun in the basement. from there i will most likely not split it since i only have one satellite head unit i want to connect, but will plug that into the run which goes to a faceplate next to my main sources faceplate in the house. then i'll plug that faceplate into my radio unit and radio into the whole house audio source

oh and i think that site has adapters (SMB type connectors) to change the SMB to f-end connectors so it's easier to work with the rg-6.

anyway, not sure if this will work in practice, but that's what i've learned so far

If you use RG6, you'll likely want to use quad shield (and good-quality RG6 QS at that.. a la Belden) with good connectors. The Sirius signal is up above 2GHz, so attenuation is very high...


You'll likely want to keep to the more rugged/low-loss connectors as well (F or N, rather than BNC or RCA)
