Just picked this up. Absolutely beautiful case compared with region 1. Only one problem- I cannot turn off the French sub-titles no matter what I try to do. This is the 1st disc I ever had with this problem. Well, it's really not a problem, but I'm just curious if the subs ARE defeatable. As this is the only DVD I've ever had from France, perhaps all discs from there are like this? Still worth the price, believe me.

Found this on the dvdforums. Now it's for a Toshiba player, but it may work with yours:

"This "cheat" works for the 2109b, I guess it might work with older players. I'm not sure about the newer players from Toshiba.

Here is how to do it:

1.Start the movie, let it get 10-20 secs into the film. This is not important, but the movie has to have started, wait until after THX/DD splash screens, etc.

2. Press stop on the controller, once.

3. Press the Subtitle button and turn off the subtitles.

4. Press the "T" button twice on the controller. The "T" button on the 2109b remote is located under the flap in the bottom right hand corner. The first press of the "T" button takes you to Chapter Select, the second press takes you to Time select.

5. Enter in the start time of the movie, e.g. 00:00:01

6. Press play.

The DVD will start from the beginning but with no subs. This method avoids the flag which tells the DVD player that Subtitles are mandatory."

What extras are on the disk?

I heard aboot this disc when I got the TF1 edition of Casino (which is badly cropped on all four sides) and I have been wondering about the quality. A DVD Beaver comparison is in order for Casino and Papillon.

Am I the only soul who think that Papillon is a great, great film? It just has raw power - and Big Steve, and Dusty - in the same movie! Yowzah! Posted Image

To me, Papillon is one of the last great old school-type adventure films; it doesn't feel like a Hollywood film from 1973 - more like 1958 or something. Great score by Goldsmith, which is isolated in 3.0 stereo on the Columbia DVD. The transfer on the Columbia is very good, in my opinion. The on-set featurette is included too, and is a great example of those starkly beautiful old-style on-set documentaries that used to be the way of things before the horrid 'Electronic Press Kits' became the fashion.
