YPAO , why does it apply gain rather than damping? (1 Viewer)

Well, actually YPAO seems to do a little bit of both. Has anybody experimented with this? The established way of equalizing, is to damp frequencies rather than apply gain, I believe. Otherwise you'd introduce relatively more noise to the signal, right? So why does YPAO apply gain, at all? I know YPAO has been discussed endlessly, but I did search the forum, and wasn't able to find a fitting answer to my question.

Audyssey typically does the same thing. It finds the loudest speaker and raises the rest. I assume it left one speaker at 0. At least that is what Aud did on my 707.
