I have BD-Live disabled currently until I learn more details on how it works and how it affects Blu-ray playback.

The BD live stuff on the Star Trek TOS sets is very cool. Video from the latest conventions, extra interviews with people involved in the restoration efforts, many in HD. Its really quite good. I've seen no playback issues because of BDlive, but then I have a PS3 and not much has an affect on its playback.

Well, my reason is that I've heard where some consumers have reported their Blu-ray players hanging up when they've tried to access certain Blu-ray BD-live content.

Its quite possible. Some stand alone blu-ray players are rather under powered for what they are asking them to do. The safe bet for a blu-ray player that is going to last and be update-able, is a PS3.

There is no evidence that the PS3 is the only player that will last. That is a misleading and inaccurate statement. The PS3 is just a game console that features the ability to play Blu-rays since PS3 games use the BR technology.

Might I remind you that every Blu-ray is updateable ... at least, the newer and more recent players are.

My recent purchases:

Casino Royale (Collector's Edition 9 BD Live)
National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets
X-Men Origins: Wolverine

;)

Which was never stated in the first place.

Take it easy. Doug was just stating that the PS3 is a safe bet -- quite likely the safest bet -- for an updateable BD player at this point. Since it's the only one (I'm aware of) that's been announced to have a 3D BD upgrade coming, that's evidence right there for it to at least be one of the safest bets.

Fact is the PS3 simply comes w/ better hardware specs than most standalones, if not quite all of them, so far. And given its position in Sony's business model, the PS3 is certainly very likely to continue to receive tons of support from Sony to be the best it can be given its hardware specs, etc.

I never said that it was the only one that will last. But as someone who owned a 1st gen Samsung blu-ray player that became obsolete and basically unusable with in a year, I can tell you that my PS3 allows me to not worry about that kind of thing happening again.

It is the only blu-ray player that has had virtually no problems playing movies that are problematic in other players. In addition, because the blu-ray player in the PS3 is basically all software driven, it is easy to upgrade when new features become available. A good example is 3D capability. It is becoming available as a simple software upgrade. Netflix instant view again was added as a software upgrade. This is not possible with most stand alone players where many features are hard wired in as a chip on the motherboard.

Add to that the fact that the PS3 is by far the fastest loading blu-ray player available makes it a very attractive choice.

I've been considering upgrading my DVD to Blu-ray - can you post your observations on the picture quality Brett?

I should thank you. That one wasn't properly tagged to the Gattaca Blu-ray in the product database, but now it's been fixed. We tried to attach as many reviews to their product entries as possible, so that they'd be easier to find, but inevitably some things slip by.
