Upgrade from Sony STR-DE945 (1 Viewer)

Hey everyone, I'm new here and I have a question about upgrading from my current receiver, a Sony STR-DE945, to something new. I'd like to get something with similar power output, preferably not less, and most of the newer featured that my current receiver does not have. HDMI pass-through, 3D pass-through, 1080p upconvert, and 7.1 channels, and the abiluity to use a microphone to auto-calibrate sound settings to a room are the things I would definitely like to see, anything else is a bonus. I've been looking for a little while now, and I've brought one receiver home ( a Pioneer, albeit a lower end model..) but it just couldn't compare with the sound and power of my Sony. 110 meaningless power rating to a 105 meaningless power rating is not going to be noticeable.

It is hard to compare one receivers stated power output to anothers because they all rate them differently. But the Sony DE945 consumes the same amount of current, 300 wpc +/- 20, as the Yamaha 571. The H/K 7550HD, also rated at 110 wpc, consumes over 1400 watts for 7 channels. This is a real general statment but you may have to look at a more expensive receiver if you want one with the same quality amp section as your old Sony, which were pretty good back then. Newer Sonys, yamaha's, pioneer's, etc don't have quite the same amp sections they did a few years ago until you get in the $800 and up range. Harman Kardon and Onkyo/Integra are a little better. Newer receivers offer a ton of features and the amp sections have gone down in quality as a result in order to keep the prices competitive. H/K's don't offer as many features and Onkyo has a huge slice of the market so they haven't deluted their amp sections as much yet. But how much power you really need depends on how loud you listen, your room size and the speakers that are connected to it. For most people/situations just about any $400 receiver is more than adequate but some people do need a lot more. Ac4l.com has the Onkyo 717 as a factory refurb for $499. In order to obtain a noticeable increase in loudness requires twice as much power (a 3dB increase). Therefore, a noticeable increase in loudness over either receiver would require approximately 200 watts per channel. It stands to reason then, that the difference between 105W and 110W is not audible.
