Looking to keep their feet in both ponds (hard core gamers and casual gamers -- something MS doesn't really compete in) Sony announced last night at the Tokyo Game Show conference their new version of its handheld game console aimed at drawing in more casual gamers.

The new Sony PS Vita 2000 is 20 percent thinner and 15 percent lighter than the current model and adds an extra hour of battery life for six hours total.

The PS Vita 2000 now has a 5-inch LCD touchscreen, which Sony said will offer better contrast and more natural-looking colors than the current OLED display. This seems very odd as OLED is supposed to have better colors and a higher contrast ration. I wonder if it is really a COGS reduction?

The new unit added one gigabyte of storage memory.

Interested? The PS Vita 2000 will be available on Oct. 10, but only in Japan. The price is 18,980 Yen (approximately $190 U.S.). No word on when it will be available in the US...

What exactly makes this more appealing to casual gamers specifically?

I think the Vita TV is way cooler. This is a slightly smaller/lighter/cheaper redesign but the Vita TV is basically a PlayStation version of AppleTV.

I had the same thought. It looks to be an upgraded, more powerful Vita.

    Casual usually denotes the opposite.

    Nope.

Casual gamers buy iPhones and iPads (or Android / MS)

It's the serious gamers that buy a second, dedicated portable gaming device.
