I have an onkyo 605. I want to have the option of using the surround sound or using just the tv speakers. What's the best way to accomplish that?

From what source? Cable/Satellite box? HDMI to the TV?

I want to be able to watch cable tv with or with surround sound. currently the cable box is connected to the tv with hdmi. I do not have the receiver connected to tv yet. Thanks

You should be able to hook the cable box to your receiver with the digital (optical or coax) connection. You can't use HDMI since the 605 will not pass the sound through.

Yes. It will pass it through if it is turned on.

Unless there is some secret button combo I missed (I have the 705).

The easiest way will be to run the red & white RCA audio cables from the cable box to the tv for audio, and maybe component cables from cable box to tv, for video. Then you can watch and listen to tv, even HD channels, without the surround system being on.
