Portable DVD player input signal question (1 Viewer)

I am going to buy a portable DVD player and I was wondering if I can use my VCR/DVD player as a tuner. I was thinking of using the coaxial video output from the VCR and attaching an RCA adaptor on the end of the coax and putting that into the input of the portable DVD player.

FYI, yes, I know it is a small screen. This is just something to keep me occupied while I exercise. I really don't want to put my old 25 inch tube TV in my room and I don't feel like shelling out the bucks for a flat panel TV.
Thanks.

The VCR's coax output would be RF channel 3 or 4 which would not work. You would have to use the line outputs (audio/video) and a dual RCA to miniature phone jack cable. That said, some portables can switch their video "output" to "input" and some can not. (look for a switch near the video jack labeled "in/out" or something similar.
