They are game consoles. Why should the play DVDs at all?

This version of the Game Cube is specifically meant to be BOTH DVD player and console. If we were talking about the Ps2 or Xbox it would just be a bonus benefit of the choice of the media used by the system. This is not the case with this system therefor the "its a gaming system" argument doesn't fly. This should be a Progressive DVD player, if your going to do it, do it right. To me this is a Panasonic DVD player that just happens to be able to play Game Cube games not the other way around.

Yeah, i know, i was just using morgan's logic on 'its a game console, why does it need progressive scan?'
Its a bonus feature... it doesnt need it, but why not right? Why not have a DVD player... why not have them do progressive scan if they're capable...

Does it matter? Does the Panasonic Gamecube/DVD player need to be a progressive scan player? Would you guys actually buy one of these units to be your DVD player?
I agree with Nick. DVD playback is a bonus feature. Besides, it isn't even coming here to the U.S. yet. I wouldn't sweat it if I were you guys.

Why do I think Morgan pines for the days of hooking all of your games up to the TV with the RF adapter. Just turn to channel 3 and go. [IMG]

Morgan's too young to remember them; he's actually said that American game systems have never done well. [IMG]

I'm annoyed that consoles are having DVD features included. If they are in there, I could care less, but when they become so important that people base their decision on which console to buy because of how good the DVD playback is, I get really annoyed. To me, it turns consoles into more of multimedia machines and no longer gaming machines, plus I don't even see a reason for including DVD playback.
The DVD GCN isn't coming out in America, so debating the relevance of its DVD playback is pointless.
I remember the days of RFU adapters. I don't like them, they suck and they are annoying. I said that American consoles have not done successful in the last few years (or even last few generations of consoles). Even though American consoles have done well, they were always beaten by the Japanese console(s) that was in the same generation.

    Joel-
If you see both consoles as totally equal, then something is wrong with you for many reasons. First off, the X-Box is more expensive because it comes with more things. The differences in price and capabilities are outlined right there, plus the launch libraries and the games already announced for each console are quite different in many areas.
Even if you see them as equal, you shouldn't base your decision on DVD playback. There will be games for the XB that won't be on the GCN and vice versa, so you will not just be buying a DVD player that plays games. They were made to be gaming consoles first and foremost, which is why Nintendo didn't include the DVD playback feature at all (the Panasonic version was part of a deal they made with Nintendo).

Morgan, why is it so important to you that everyone think the way you do?
If you get annoyed because someone wants to combine some functionality into one box, you must have very little else to worry about. I suggest you turn off your games and watch the news for a while. There are more important things to worry about right now.

The personal attacks continue. If you don't agree with Morgan, you are either "not a gamer", or "something is wrong with you".

To anyone who has actually been on the gaming forums in the last two months, you should know that there have been many debates about the differences of the PS2, XB, and GCN. I see it as impossible to see each console as 100% equal to another (besides the DVD playback abilities). There are differences in power, price, games, and even design differences. If you see two as equal because you are looking for a game machine that also plays DVDs, then chances are you are not a hardcore gamer but rather a casual gamer. Its your money, spend it where and how you want. I may disagree with your reasoning behind your decision, but I will accept it because I have to.
What I've been trying to say is that you shouldn't look at two consoles and buy one just because it plays DVDs and then say that you are into games. The only way that I would believe you is if you have a family and are tight on cash (so you can't buy a separate DVD player), if you are buying more than one console, or if you have other reasons for buying it. In my mind, it is wrong to just buy one console because it plays DVDs or complain when one doesn't.
