I changed my HP 952C to be a shared printer on my little home network. The HP 952 is a basic inkjet printer hardwired to my W2k desktop PC. I have a new laptop running Vista and trying to connect to the printer. I can see the printer on my Vista laptop but I can't connect to it due to the O/S differences and lack of drivers installed. What do I need to do to install the network printer, I would need to install printer drivers for the Hp952c on my Vista Laptop? Or do I need to install something on the W2k box it's connected to?

OK, with a little help from HP, I guess I chose the wrong install option.. Don't try to add a network printer, but use a New Port->Local Port to add it. I was choosing the wrong option..Here's the email from HP that fixed everything:

----
Step 1:

Please follow the below steps from the computer to which the printer is connected directly.

1. Click Start >Right-click on My Computer (Host Computer).

2. Select Properties.

Here you can find the 'Computer name' tab.

Note this Full Computer Name here.

Step 2:

After the steps are done, follow the below steps from the same computer to which the printer is connected:

1. Click Start, Control Panel, and then Printers.

2. Right-click on the HP Deskjet 952c Printer icon, and then select the Sharing option from the list.

3. Click on Sharing tab and enter a share name such as, HPDJ.

4. Click on OK.

The printer is now shared as HPDJ.

Perform in Windows Vista:

Step 3:

1. Click on start and then Control Panel.

2. Choose Printers.

3. Choose Add Printers.

4. Choose Add a local printer.

5. Click on Create a new port. The default in the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

6. A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name.

Type in the \FullComputernameSharedPrintername

Ex: \mycomputerHPDJ

7. Click Next.

8. Under the Manufacturers list, select HP.

9. Under the Printers list, select the HP Deskjet 952c Series printer and click

Next.

10. Under ‘Do you want to use this printer as the default printer?’ Select "Yes" and click ‘Next’.

11. When asked to print a test page, select "Yes", and then Finish.
