True, and even when measuring accuracy there are differences in the precision of the measurement. A test instrument may be able to distinguish between levels of accuracy - in terms of numerical value - that are absolutely indistinguishable to the human eye. Tools like DVE and Avia, with their test patterns and filters can't match the precision of instruments, and have a wider margin of error.

Still, they are precisely intended to allow the average user to go beyond "what looks good to me" and test how close to spec a given set is, within the limits of precision inherent in the filters and test patterns.

When I say the JVC offers a very good picture I mean it offers a very good picture for a set that has its consumer-level calibration checked and/or adjusted (most times it needs no adjustments) every few months to ensure the image is accurate as well as pretty. So it isn't a purely subjective judgment. The TV does what the test discs say it should be doing.
