Bad TV Signal woes continue... (1 Viewer)

OK, here's a mystery for you..

At Home in North Jersey, we have a perfect picture using an ATI 7500 64MB AIW TV Tuner. No wavy lines. No diagonal lines going from lower right to upper left. No color distortion lines.

Yet when I bring it down the shore, THIS is what it looks like..

CH 5, on Cablevision service..



This is what it looks like on CH 5, with the VCR Tuner. Wavy lines, but other wise the pciture is fine.


Without the VCR, same Ch.

All the other channels with the VCR look like the first picture, wavy lines all over the place. Without the VCR, CH's 2-6 look like the second picture, and the rest have noticeable fuzz.

We then hooked up the cable feed directly from the wall into a regular TV, and the picture came in perfectly. Hooking up the Cable directly into the computer, the picture resembled the second example still with the wavy lines.

Again, this only happens in one location, not the other. Same set of circumstances in Wyckoff, same set of devices hanging around the computer desk(VCR, Stereo, Gamecube), and the picture comes in perfect.

Any ideas?

It seems as though the OTA signals are intefering with the cable signals. Capping unused taps might help. Attenuating the signal might help. Go to a local RS and pick up some attentuators and filters and see what helps, save the packages and take back what dont work.
Also make sure all connections are tight starting from the point where it enters the house... a bad crimp on a connector could do it to.

I'd check to make sure that the salt air of the shore didn't cause any connections to go bad. I'd also check all splitters that might be in the line. Make sure they pass at least 1GHz and don't attenuate the signal too much.
Can you take a tv to a point where the cable enters the house and connect it there ? If the signal is bad there, then call cablevision. Hope this helps, let us know what the fix is ..

Maybe the VCR TV tuner has inherently less sensitivity in its first tuner stages than the regular TV.

To almost prove this, connect each to the same set of rabbit ears in turn and see if one gets noticeably better OTA reception than the other.

For the VCR, double check your settings, TV/VCR switch in the VCR position for using the VCR's tuner, channel 3/4 switch matches what the TV was tuned to.
