Immortals
The approaching spring break, and a promise of hordes of out-of-school disc buyers, prompted the studios to release several high-profile Blu-ray Discs and DVDs March 6, so that the top four spots on the Nielsen VideoScan sales charts for the week ended March 11 all went to new releases.
Debuting at No. 1 on both First Alert, which tracks overall sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart was 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s Immortals, an actioner that grossed $83.5 million in U.S. theaters during its fall 2011 theatrical run.
Taking the No. 2 spot, also on both charts, was the first season set of HBO’s acclaimed “Game of Thrones,” a medieval fantasy series based on author George R. R. Martin's bestselling “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy books.
Third place, again on both charts, went to the remake of the dance movie Footloose, from Paramount, which earned $51.8 million in U.S. theaters.
The fourth spot on the overall sales chart went to Sony Pictures’ Jack and Jill, an Adam Sandler comedy that earned $74.2 million in U.S. theaters. Paramount’s Hugo, the previous week’s top Blu-ray Disc seller, took the No. 4 spot on the Blu-ray Disc chart, while Jack and Jill finished fifth. On First Alert, Hugo slipped to No. 7 after debuting at No. 2 the prior week.
Jack and Jill claimed victory among rental consumers, bowing at No. 1 on Home Media Magazine’s weekly video rental chart, with Footloose debuting at No. 2. Hugo, the previous week’s top rental, slipped to No. 3 on the rental chart.

The order of magnitude for the scaling for the new release Blu-ray and DVD sales can maybe be judged by looking at the normal attrition from last weeks leading titles Hugo and Puss and Boots to this new week.

Blu-ray Sales: Immortals and Game Battle for Blu-ray Throne
As it was on the DVD sales chart, there was a battle for first place on the Blu-ray sales chart between two new releases. Immortals beat Game of Thrones: Season Two in terms of units, 927,000 units to 680,000 units. However, Game comes out ahead in terms of revenue at $29.89 million to $21.31 million.
As far as the two releases opening week Blu-ray share, Immortals managed 59% while Game earned 57%. Both of those results are fantastic.
Footloose opened in third place with 188,000 units / $4.59 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 29%, which is weak compared to the market as a whole, but acceptable given the genre.
Hugo fell from first to fourth with 175,000 units / $4.60 million for the week giving it 713,000 units / $19.36 million after two. It continues to generate more revenue from Blu-ray than it has from DVD.
Jack and Jill rounded out the top five with 160,000 units / $3.43 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 28%. Like Footloose, this was weak compared to the format as a whole, but not bad for a comedy.
A little further down the list we find The Lion King II: Simba's Pride in seventh place with 86,000 units/ $2.16 million, while The Lion King 1 1/2 opened in tenth place with 57,000 units / $1.43 million.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail just missed the top ten with 53,000 units / $683,000. All three Blu-rays did very well for catalog releases.
NFL Super Bowl XLVI Champions: 2011 New York Giants opened in 20th place with 26,000 units / $543,000.
The final new release to chart was Tooth Fairy 2, which placed 22nd with 18,000 units / $280,000. An opening week Blu-ray share of 12% is weak, even for a direct-to-DVD release like this.
Overall Blu-ray market was strong in nearly every regard. Growth from last week was very strong up 52% in terms of units and 72% in terms of revenue.
Compared to last year, growth was even stronger up 102% in terms of units and 161% in terms of revenue.
The only factor that wasn't purely in Blu-ray's favor was the DVD sales, which were also very strong compared to last week. In fact, DVD sales were up by nearly the same margin as Blu-rays, so the overall Blu-ray share was relatively static at 38% in terms of units and just shy of 50% in terms of revenue.
However, and this is a relatively important caveat, the second best selling DVD for the week, Barbie in a Mermaid Tale 2, didn't even come out on Blu-ray. So the fact that Blu-ray was on par with DVD week-over-week was good news.
I don't know if the good news will continue next week. The Descendants was the biggest box office hit coming out next week, but it is not the kind of film that needs to be seen in high definition to be enjoyed, so it might not sell well on Blu-ray.

The Adventures of Tintin might do well on high definition, but it wasn't a huge hit here. By comparison, last year sales were led by The Fighter, which was also not a prime Blu-ray release. I think 2012 will win out, but it might not be a blow out like this week.

DVD Sales: Immortals and Throne Both Have Claim to Top Spot
New releases dominated the DVD sales chart with two DVDs having a legitimate claim to the top spot. Immortals sold the most units 649,000 units, while its revenue was the second best for the week at $11.12 million.
The second best selling release was Barbie in a Mermaid Tale 2 with 527,000 units / $6.32 million. Its revenue wouldn't be enough to reach the top five. Again, this franchise continues to rake in money on the home market.
The other release that has a legitimate claim for top spot is Game of Thrones: Season One, which was third in terms of units with 518,000 units, but it was clearly number one in terms of revenue with $17.60 million. This is a fantastic start for a TV on DVD release.
Footloose opened in fourth place with 461,000 units / $7.64 million, while Jack and Jill was right behind with 409,000 units / $7.77 million.
The only other new release to reach the top 30 was Tooth Fairy 2 with 128,000 units / $1.67 million, which was enough for 11th place.

Best Buy Pushes 'John Carter'
13 Mar, 2012
By: John Latchem
BestBuy.jpg

Just as John Carter is opening in theaters to lukewarm box office reception, Best Buy is touting a promotion for the Disney film. Consumers who buy a Blu-ray of Remember the Titans or either of the “National Treasure” movies at $14.99 each can get a coupon for $8 off a John Carter admission ticket. The offer expires April 7.
Best Buy also offered a $10 savings with the purchase of the first seasons of “Breakout Kings” and “The Killing,” and triple Reward Zone bonus points with purchase of Paramount’s The Adventures of Tintin Blu-ray or 3D combo packs.
Target had exclusive availability of two Universal shows: Fairly Legal: Season One and In Plain Sight: Season Four, at $25 each. Target also gave away an MP3 audio book (touted as having a $30 value) with copies of Anchor Bay’s My Week With Marilyn ($17 DVD, $23 Blu-ray).

Projections: 'Tintin' Looks to Emerge From Crowded Field

19 Mar, 2012
By: John Latchem
Tintin.jpg

The end of the first quarter of 2012 is starting to get a little crowded on new-release shelves. For the week ending March 18, several new titles are looking to score a huge debut in a crowded field.
The most likely to top the charts is Paramount Home Entertainment's The Adventures of Tintin, the animated adventure from Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson that scored north of $77 million in U.S. theaters (and about $374 million worldwide).
However, Oscar-lauded The Descendants, a George Clooney vehicle from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, earned more at the domestic box office, with $81.64 million, and could ride that momentum to a top spot, especially if Happy Feet Two ($64 million) takes family dollars away from Tintin.
With Descendants on a kiosk embargo, Jack and Jill has the edge in the rental market for a second week, probably finishing just ahead of Tintin on the rental chart.

'Happy Feet Two' Dances Way to Top Sales Spot

Happy Feet Two
The approach of Spring Break continues to find studios stepping up their release schedules of high-profile titles, as Hollywood home video marketers take aim at out-of-school kids and their Easter gift-giving parents.
Three new releases landed in the top three slots on the weekly Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks all disc sales at most big retailers except Walmart and Sam’s Club, as well as Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart for the week ended March 18.
On the overall sales chart, Warner Home Video’s Happy Feet Two, which earned $64 million in U.S. theaters, debuted at No. 1. Paramount’s The Adventures of Tintin ($77.6 million) bowed at No. 2 and 20th Century Fox’s The Descendants ($82 million) debuted at No. 3.
The first two films are animated family features; Descendants is an Oscar-winning dramatic comedy that stars George Clooney in a critically hailed performance as a wealthy father who tries to reconnect with his daughters after his wife is seriously injured in a boating accident.
On the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, all three films also captured the top three spots, albeit in a different order. The top-selling Blu-ray Disc was Adventures of Tintin, with Descendants following at No. 2 and Happy Feet Two trailing at No. 3.
Accordingly, Nielsen research shows Tintin generated 50% of its sales from the Blu-ray Disc format, compared to 32% for Descendants and just 23% for Happy Feet Two.
On Home Media Magazine’s weekly video rental chart, Adventures of Tintin was an easy winner, in part due to the fact that Paramount doesn’t delay shipping its new releases to rental dealers.
Sony Pictures’ Jack and Jill slipped to No. 2 after two weeks in the top spot, followed by another new release, Summit Entertainment’s The Three Musketeers, which debuted at No. 3.

Blu-ray Sales: Tintin Finds First Spot
The Adventures of Tintin led all new releases and took top spot on the Blu-ray sales chart. It sold 504,000 units and generated $11.09 million in opening week sales. This represents an opening Blu-ray share of very nearly 50%, which is an excellent start for a kids film.
The Descendants opened in second place with 310,000 units / $6.20 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 32%, which is good for a drama and just a little bit below the format's average.
Happy Feet Two only managed third place with 270,000 units / $8.11 million, giving it a Blu-ray share of just 23%. It was a kids film, but a 3-D animated one, so it should have done better than this.
Immortals fell from first to fourth with 204,000 units / $5.72 million for the week and 978,000 units / $23.52 million after two.
The Three Musketeers grabbed the final spot in the top five with 184,000 units / $4.59 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 53%, which normally would be a reason to celebrate, but its home market numbers are so low that this is not enough.
My Week with Marilyn debuted in eighth place with 85,000 units / $1.70 million. For a limited release, an opening week Blu-ray share of 29% is better than expected.
Young Adult could place no better than 16th place with 29,000 units / $669,000. Given its genre and its limited release, an opening week Blu-ray share of 23% is acceptable.
Overall Blu-ray market was strong compared to last year, but weak compared to last week and when compared to DVD sales. This is not too surprising, as the almost none the new releases were aimed at the prime demographic for Blu-ray.
Compared to last week, the format was down by 7% in terms of units and 15% in terms of dollars.
Compared to last year, growth was meteoric with Blu-rays up 99% in terms of units and 131% in terms of dollars.
DVD sales grew significantly compared to last week and last year, although the growth from last year was a lot thinner than Blu-ray growth was. This left the overall Blu-ray share at 33% in terms of units and 44% in terms of dollars.

The winter blockbusters are trickling out, so Blu-ray sales should continue to be strong.

Next week, The Muppets should get a boost thanks to nostalgia, while both The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy should draw in the more mature target demographic. This week last year, the best selling DVD was Yogi Bear while the best selling Blu-ray was The Tourist, neither of which were big sellers.
We should again see strong growth year-over-year.

DVD Sales: Happy Feet's Debut Puts a Smile on Your Face
Like last week, new releases dominated the DVD sales chart this week with three new releases topping the chart. The best of the best was Happy Feet Two with 896,000 units / $13.43 million during its first week on the home market. The film struggled at the box office, so this start on the home market is better than expected.
The Descendants opened in second place with 655,000 units / $9.82 million, which is good for a film aimed at a more mature target demographic.
The Adventures of Tintin was right behind with 505,000 units / $7.82 million. Hopefully it did better on Blu-ray.
Puss in Boots rose to fourth place with 224,000 units / $4.35 million for the week giving it totals of 2.21 million / $37.09 million after a month of release.
Immortals fell from first to fifth with 222,000 units / $3.75 million, while its running tallies rose to 764,000 units / $13.03 million.
My Week with Marilyn just missed the top five with 207,000 units / $3.11 million. This is an excellent beginning for a limited release.
On the other hand, The Three Musketeers only managed ninth place with 165,000 units / $2.71 million. Then again, it bombed hard in theaters, so this result is not surprising.
The final new release to chart was Young Adult, which landed in 98,000 units / $1.77 million during its first week on the home market. This isn't bad for a limited release, but I had higher expectations.

Lunch With 'The Muppets' (WE 03/25/12)
20 Mar, 2012
By: John Latchem
MuppetsLunch.jpg

Anyone who has wanted to have lunch with the Muppets should head down to Best Buy, which is offering an exclusive lunch box with copies of the Blu-ray combo pack of The Muppets.
The included combo pack is the Wocka Wocka version with the film’s soundtrack for digital download, making the $27.99 in-store price cheaper than the $34.99 online price for the standalone version of the same combo pack, which isn’t offered in many stores. Best Buy further offers a $5 coupon from Disney at MuppetsCoupon.com/BestBuy, applicable toward the Wocka Wocka Blu-ray (and the lunch box).
Best Buy also has a free 7-inch bunny minion plush with purchase of Universal’s Hop Blu-ray, released on March 23.
Target offered a $5 savings with joint purchase of exclusive editions of both Hop and Despicable Me. Target’s Hop Blu-ray comes with wearable bunny ears.
For The Muppets, Target offered a six-episode “Muppet Show” sampler DVD with the Blu-ray of the new movie.
At Walmart, customers could get a set of four Muppets finger puppets with purchase of the Muppets Blu-ray/DVD combo pack (the verison without the digital soundtrack).

Projections: 'Muppets' Should Overcome 'Tattoo'

26 Mar, 2012
By: John Latchem
MuppetsTattoo.jpg

The top sales spot for the week ending March 25 should be a close race between Disney’s The Muppets, a kid-friendly title that grossed $88.6 million in U.S. theaters, and Sony Pictures’ thriller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which is based on a bestselling novel and grossed $102.5 million.
The family appeal and retail ubiquity of The Muppets should give it an edge.
The tendency of families to buy rather than rent Disney movies should push The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo to the top of the rental chart.
Projected Top 3 Sellers for Week Ending 3/25/2012
1 The Muppets Disney New
2 The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Sony Pictures New
3 Hop Universal New

The Muppets
Walt Disney Studios topped the national home video sales charts the week ended March 25 with The Muppets, a family film that grossed $88.6 million in theaters and generated a surprising 52% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc.
The Muppets debuted at No. 1 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart. The film also debuted at No. 4 on Home Media Magazine’s weekly video rental chart, behind Sony Pictures’ The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo at No. 1, Universal Studios’ Tower Heist, fresh off its 28-day kiosk moratorium, at No. 2, and the Sony Pictures comedy Jack and Jill at No. 3.
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which took in $102.5 million in U.S. theaters, debuted at No. 2 on both sales charts, moving 78% as many units as The Muppets, Nielsen data shows.
Bowing at No. 3, also on both sales charts, was Universal’s Hop, an Easter film that grossed $108.1 million at the box office.
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo generated 55% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc, while for Hop the tally was 36%.
Warner’s Happy Feet Two, the No. 1 seller the previous week, dropped to No. 6 on First Alert, behind Paramount’s The Adventures at Tintin at No. 4 (down from No. 2) and 20th Century Fox’s newly released comedy The Sitter ($30.4 million box office) at No. 5.
