If you are speaking about Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD/MA, they are lossless compression schemes and will sound identical when sourced from the same original. So neither one is sonically "better."

Thanks. Yes, that's what I'm talking about. On some Blu-rays there's a choice of both of those, and I was wondering which to choose.

That's interesting. I can't remember encountering a title with both TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. Can you give some examples?

Sony's Close Encounters had both.

I can't think of which ones right now. They may have been from Netflix.

Anyway, is there a difference between the 2 or not?

From an audio point of view? No.

But it's going to be a rare occasion when you find both on one disc. Now Dolby Digital and DTS-HD MA, that's a different story.

While sonically, the two audio formats should sound the same, there are theoretically some ancillary benefits to the DTS-MA format over the Dolby TrueHD - namely the reduced amount of disc space required for the "Core+Extension" model of DTS-MA compared to TrueHD's need for a separate lossy 5.1 audio track for backwards compatibility.

The disc space saved using the more efficient DTS-MA stream would leave more room for a higher video bitrate and/or additional special features on some titles.

However, to the OP's initial intent in asking this question, I concur with the other responders - there is no audio quality benefit of either format over the other.

One theoretical advantage in TrueHD's favor is that the decoder will never impose "remapping" of the surround signals into the fronts as can happen with 7.1 HDMA. Just give me the original tracks from the studio master, thanks.
