Love all those films. A pity the studios don’t realize there is still a dedicated audience for these movies. Heck I wasn’t even born until well after these were made but they are my among my favorite genre.
I’ll take any and all of them, even if the sword and sandal moniker loosely or inappropriately is applied. From the lowliest Samson film to the beauty of Helen.
Still wish for a superior copy of Fury of Achilles with Gordon Mitchell. That’s high on want list.
I always liked the set designs for Silver Chalice. Almost had a bit of mid century modernism to them or maybe even 1920s German expressionism. I’d love to have that one on bluray. I have the TT Solomon and Sheba. It’s okay looking, probably one of the first TT titles I bought upon release that I...
The Slave was another good one that has a pretty decent DVD release. A bluray would be great to have though.
I saw Son of Samson the other night. I picked it up from Kino on release. Great film and looks wonderful.
Would someone mind reposting the Sodom and Gomorrah link where it's for sale? Is it confirmed that it's region free? I'd really like to get my hands on this one.
I’d be happy with the Silver Chalice, I love the avant- garde and minimalist look of the sets and Jack Palances over the top acting as Simon. Newman may have disowned it but I think it’s one of the more interesting semi-peplum type of films.
Of course I’d be remiss if I didn’t state that I’d...
Wow I’m excited about the Sodom and Gomorrah release. I hope it is Region A friendly. I still have the old widescreen laserdisc. Anouk Aimee is gorgeous in this.
I only have the TT release so can’t compare but outside of some noise(?) during low light scenes and the opening credits being very jittery it looks pretty nice. Overall I’m happy with it.
Revolt of the Slaves - Kino Lorber (kind of walks the line between peplum and a '50s era Biblical epic)
Erik the Conqueror - Arrow (another pseudo sword and sandal film)
These two may not be "proper" peplum films but they fit the mold pretty close.
I just wish I was alive when these films were coming out. It must have been something else.
I missed them all by at least a few decades unfortunately. My overall favorite genre of film to be honest, especially those in the various widescreen processes.
I have the TT release but it’s been awhile since I watched it. I don’t remember it looking that bad. It wasn’t beautiful but I thought it was very presentable.
My favorites that are currently released are (my favorites are constantly in a state of flux):
1. The Egyptian
2. The Ten Commandments
3. Ben-Hur
4. Cleopatra
5. Quo Vadis
My release wishes are:
Sodom and Gomorrah
Land of the Pharaohs
The Steve Reeves Hercules films (the Mark Forest ones too)...
Yes, when we read the Odyssey it used all of the Latin/Roman names instead of the Greek. I'm not sure why. This was in the late 1980's, so I can't remember which translation it was.
This is an interesting release. I watched the DVD a year or so ago. Not one of Douglas' best films but it was...
Is there any chance that Twilight Time, Olive, or Kino could get ahold of these titles? I get confused on which company has deals with the different studios, but it seems like there is a demand for these films on blu ray, especially Barabbas.
Land of the Pharoahs looked nice on the DVD. I imagine it wouldn't take much work for a blu ray. If I recall Helen of Troy was pretty decent as well. I've been meaning to pick up Barabbas but haven't done so yet. Maybe I should hold off of the DVD is poor. Haven't seen that one before though.
I'd love to get this one. I've been thinking about picking up the old laserdisc release just to have a widescreen version. The current DVD is a travesty.
Not necessarily an epic, but a movie about Ancient Egypt that deserves a release is Robert Taylor's Valley of the Kings. I don't believe it was even released as a DVD or laserdisc.
