Gary, Thanks for that. I agree with the issues. Unfortunately, there is a perception that big is beautiful, no secret to anyone buying oversized boxes of PC software over the years. I wondered if there is software out there that can effectively maintain the screen resolution while...

Gary: Thanks for the Goldfinger comparison. Just as in the last release, I'm bothered by the color timing. I'm not saying it is as bad as other instances in the Bond series, because it isn't. But Jill Masterson's hair is more toward white hues than the more platinum blonde colored stills...

Gary, Looks like this comparison is missing a scorecard, unless you stopped doing them. One can say ANY color timing or video image is a matter of preference but the Region 1 goes beyond reasonableness when a white shirt on a b&w image doesn't look white but rather appears to be a hack job...

In the past, only sales estimates got reported. Even the stock market has relied on asking retailers for their numbers rather than getting them from the studios. Even then it becomes well Wal-Mart had sales of X and we assume that Wal_Mart has Y percent of the market thus the full estimate is...

There is a lot of Blu-Ray There is a lot of PAL Region 2 There is a lot of NTSC Region 1 There is a lot of attention paid to Criterion releases A lot of attention paid to Box Sets Pound for pound a lot of attention to sub-genres like Film Noir Seems to me there is something for...

The revised Superbit has more detail but it takes a bit of scrutiny to notice it. The new version also appears more greenish to this eye. Regardless, my main point is around the viability of SHOWING the difference on a website. The value of hi-def comes as the projected images gets larger...

I also was really looking forward to the release. But, without the hoped-for director's commentary it lost some appeal. Now, ... disappointing ... I'll wait for something better.

Interesting, the cropping differences between the two releases certainly varies. In the shot of Scottie balancing his cane the new DVD has more image both right and left (and top and bottom). Yet in the next shot with Midge looking up towards the ceiling the older image has slightly more...

John: Thanks for info on the film showings. I think I might have missed one in NYC (rather recently) but hopefully I'll find some coming up. Have you seen the re-released film yourself? If so, do you remember whether the nun's habit appeared significantly off-white? I'm asking because I...

Agreed. Robust and interesting review, well done. I really don't see much difference in many of the films and those I see differences in I don't really have an opinion on whether they are significantly improved or not. So, it becomes an easy decision for me to pass this by.

Gary, Thanks for the Contempt comparison. Naturally, a lot of things get down to subjective points when there are two or more strong DVD contenders and things like framing and anamorphic presentations are the same. If image quality is a difference, one could easily say that the...
