Yes, that certain reviewer's score is more than a little peculiar given the huge amount of white negative dirt and scratches the source material has. I don't blow a gasket, I just scratch my head and wonder how anyone can take that seriously. I understand enjoying the film - I enjoyed it...

You think the problems with negative dirt and scratches on The Big Combo are MINOR? I must be watching a different transfer than you because mine is littered with that stuff from start to finish. Some of it looks very pleasing, some of it is too soft, almost as if two sources were used. But...

I'm glad to hear it, but how do you explain Billy Mitchell being released. If that's their idea of something acceptable, then they need to learn the definition of acceptable.

I don't know Olive from a whole in the wall, but I can guess that they are not putting ANY money into the transfers themselves. Like Twilight Time, I'm sure they are handed the master and then they go off and do the authoring and pressing. And I can assure you that Twilight Time has passed on...

The BUBBLE? Why would anyone EVER do a 4K scan of The Bubble? There isn't 4K worth of information on that negative. I understand if you have the luxury to preserve at that cost, but if it's just for a release a 2K scan or even a hi-def scan would be fine.

What is so hard to understand here? They should not have released The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell if that was the best they were given. You say no. You don't ask people to spend dough on crap and this argument of "well, at least we have it" doesn't cut the mustard or the ketchup or the...

Here is the bottom line for any label like Olive Films - have some bloody discernment. If you want to license a film like The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell and you are sent the transfer and it's a horror show - send it back, don't license it and move on. You don't have to release everything...

Sorry, I've done it and it is an easy fix as long as you know what you're doing, color-wise. The look of this film is easy to know in any number of properly done color transfers of films from that era - it's really not brain surgery and there aren't two rights - only one. The complainers for...

Father Goose, for me, is a delightful film all the way, with a terribly muddled transfer - not a disaster, but not ever quite sharp enough and color that resembles in no way the gorgeous dye transfer prints of this film. It is clean, though, and not riddled with negative and positive dirt and...

IT's the site you're referencing. The scores for the Olive releases are frequently higher than you'd imagine. And yes, they downplayed the High Noon criticism but that site seems to operate with a particularly odd set of ideas. :) It's also rather inane of Olive to service them and not the HTF.

Why is what? The fact that I find it fascinating that reviewers on other sites give this label a complete pass, while not doing the same for Twilight Time? I don't know, I find it fascinating. I'm not talking about here, I'm talking about other places. If you don't find that fascinating...

I actually agree with ROclockCK about China Gate. It's very sharp with excellent contrast, but if Twilight Time had put out that exact transfer they would have been lambasted on every board, but Olive seems to get a pass on a lot of transfers with that amount of both negative and positive dirt...
