    "The Alamo"s Status?

As I have mentioned elsewhere .you can buy a multi region bluray player for about $US78 in Australia..I would never buy a player that wasn't multi region and never have. All my video and dvd players were always multi region. There is no point in complaining that you cannot watch other...

    "The Alamo"s Status?

I am pretty sure it was the full version that I saw? Being in NYC for the first time (and also in the USA) and being the first film that I saw in NYC, maybe the excitement distracted me from noticing that maybe it was the cut version. At least I did see the uncut version in Wellington...

    "The Alamo"s Status?

The sound was indeed awesome and it was not surprising that it won an oscar. It was the best ever sound (at the time of THE ALAMO'S release) that I had ever experienced in a cinema .Saw the film on a 60 foot wide Todd-AO screen when it was first released. I never forgot the amazing...

    "The Alamo"s Status?

Maybe MGM don't care as THE ALAMO was not an MGM film and why spend money to restore another studio's embarrassing and expensive flop? Does not make sense to me especially when MGM could use the money to restore some of their own much more worthy back catalogue of films.

The original Roadshow cut could be bought in Australia but imported from China. I have a copy but I imagine that it is a pirated copy

    "The Alamo"s Status?

Other reasons could be that it was flop when first released, was a very tedious film for most of the time and had some bad acting from some of the main cast.On the other hand it had an amazing score, some great songs , a brilliant battle scene and a very moving finale. I did...

    "The Alamo"s Status?

I still blame whoever stored WWOTBG in a place that was subject to water damage .(a result of an earthquake perhaps?). Surely MGM had better facilities in which to store their negatives? After all, they partly owned the copyright and must share the blame for the negative's...

    "The Alamo"s Status?

Whether you like THE ALAMO film or not,the big question in my opinion, is why was the original negative allowed to end up in such a bad state? It was the same for THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM. If those and numerous other films were properly looked after in the first place then...

    "The Alamo"s Status?

The shorter version was missing too much footage including one of the great songs. Luckily I do have the complete version on dvd which I bought many ,many years ago. The best thing about the movie for me, was, the brilliant soundtrack and very emotional finale.

Not everybody would call the film in question as a "classic" movie.

    "The Alamo"s Status?

There have been a lot of private collectors of 70mm feature films since the seventies or earlier. Maybe one day they will come forward and let people know what they have in the collections that they have kept secret for generations. One collector in New Zealand was once reported to...

    "The Alamo"s Status?

There would be too much missing if only the cut version was released. This would include one of the great songs (here's to the ladies) . Several people get killed in an explosion but you would never know what happened to them in the cut version.

    "The Alamo"s Status?

I agree with your comments 100%.There are many people out there who despised THE ALAMO .THE GREEN BERETS was an abomination. As I said previously, the sound was the best that I ever heard in a film at the time. I have never forgotten it. It richly deserved it's Academy Award...

    "The Alamo"s Status?

The only things that impressed me when I saw it originally in 70mm in 1960. were the unforgettable music and the brilliant final moments of the film. The film richly deserved it's Oscar for best sound..The tedious film and some bad acting and lack of the real facts about the siege of...

    "The Alamo"s Status?

I couldn't agree with you more. I intensely hate digital and very rarely go to a cinema today. Imax is worse in digital as the images have no depth . I still have fond memories of working in a 70mm first release cinema and was lucky to have seen 173 feature films projected in 70mm (...

I prefer British , European and Asian films to that from the USA. In my list of my all time favourite films, not one emanated from the USA.Lawrence Of Arabia is the only English speaking film in my list. It ranks number 3.A flawless film in every way despite there being some events that...

    "The Alamo"s Status?

I was referring to the films when ORIGINALLY released NOT their reissues ,which were (in the case of BEN-HUR and SLEEPING BEAUTY) shown in 70mm more than a decade later. MGM,which owned it's cinemas weren't interested in installing 70mm projection at the time.SOUTH PACIFIC didn't run for over...

It was the leading cinema out of a dozen city cinemas in a Capital city.( 2 x 70mm and a Cinerama cinema) We screened SOUTH PACIFIC in 70mm for 25 weeks and later THE SOUND OF MUSIC ran for 41 weeks. That was a record run that has never been beaten. BEN HUR was a huge success but only...

    "The Alamo"s Status?

Probably MGM have also lost or let deteriorate the original 70mm negative of RAINTREE COUNTY? I doubt that it was a lack of 70mm equipped cinemas that was the reason for it only being released in 35mm. We had 70mm projection where I worked (and a huge screen) but we only screened the film...

Aren't copies of all American films required to be kept in storage, by law? Surely a print of THE ALAMO is in storage and can be scanned for bluray release? Lets us not forget that the film was a flop when first released. It did however deserve the Oscar for the Best Sound. That was truly...

    "The Alamo"s Status?

Maybe MGM consider that they will lose to much money on any restoration .Let us not forget that the film was a flop in it's original release. I saw it in 70mm in 1960 . What did impress me was the academy award winning best sound. The music and songs were also unforgettable but the film...
