I know this was addressed to Lee and Nelson, but may I just say:
Your impeccable musicality as well as your encyclopaedic knowledge of both music theory and Star Trek lore surely compensate for this one instance of wretched fallibility.
Seriously, you are one of my heroes!
I don't mean to get off thread here, but another terrible music substitution by Paramount was the removal of "What'll I Do?" by Irving Berlin from the Robert Redford "The Great Gatsby". That song was really interwoven into the score by Nelson Riddle, who did great arrangements for that film. I...
Well, what I will say is that I watched the entire episode on laserdisc, and even with the replaced music and the awful video quality, the story is so good that I was caught up in it regardless and had tears at the end like I always do when I watch this episode. The truth is, I don't watch it...
Yes, but listen carefully to the music just after Edith confronts Spock about the tools. It sounds like a hint of "Goodnight, Sweetheart" remains in there. Maybe my ears are playing tricks, or maybe it wasn't enough of a quote to get the copyright police riled up.
I have pulled out my laserdisc of "City" and captured the scenes with replaced music. You can view it on youtube at this link (if the link does not work for some reason, you can copy it and paste it in your browser). Disclaimer on the laserdisc cover:
I am listening to Season Two and I am noticing that the "Act Opener" tracks (i.e. The Enterprise orbiting at the start of the show) are much grander, with bigger brass fanfare, than in Season One. I think I prefer the Season One versions.
My pleasure. But if I were truly a genius, I would know what "impension" means!
By the way, I really like about 24 seconds into the track when they add the piccolo. Gives me chills.
I watched "This Side of Paradise" this afternoon, after listening to that "Ruth" track about 30 times today. That music, whether written for that episode or not, fits so perfectly and heartrendingly. It is really Spock's episode, IMO. The scene where he explains that he cannot change and that...
Yes, I am sure he meant "ritardando", because in the first take it does seem to slow just a bit at the end, whereas in the later takes it stays in tempo. I like the ritardando, frankly, sounds just a hair rushed without it.
I guess I should clarify that I inferred he meant "ritardando" from the...
I am really enjoying listening to the different takes of the Main Title and End Title, S1-D5, tracks 73 - 76. Amazing how different the takes are. A few things I noticed:
Track 73 - the xylophone (or vibes?) plays each notice twice, which is not repeated in later takes. I've never heard it like...
Could someone kindly direct me to the track that is used as the love theme in "This Side of Paradise"? I'm just not finding it. Thank you so much.
I am enjoying the conversation, by the way, very informative and thought-provoking.
Does anybody know if the jazzy, "cocktail" version of the Star Trek TOS theme from "Conscience of The King" is available anywhere? I picked up the Symphonic Suites CD that includes Conscience, but that cut was not included. Thanks so much.
I have been loving the new 3-cd set of TMP. My favorite track (as it was even back in the days of LP) is #5 - The Enterprise. I especially love the section at 4:37. It sounds like Beethoven there, the rhythms and meter pulling against each other. Fascinating and delightful. I remember seeing the...
