That test was flawed as one set was brighter than the other (probably due to the 4k source material being "tweaked" to look brighter and draw attention to it ;)) Anytime you have a test that totally defies the laws of optics in human vision, then you know it's flawed.

    Article: 4K Blu-ray Discs Arriving in 2015

Good question, but I highly doubt it will look worse. If UHD BD launches within the next year, the vast majority of 4K TV owners will have the TV's that lack HDR. And it would make a bad first impression on most people, which is the last thing the format would need. So, if necessary, they...

    Article: 4K Blu-ray Discs Arriving in 2015

Just wanted to point out that the Sony 4K masters should already contain the information needed to encode in the wider color gamut and higher dynamic range. They just need to do another encode that takes advantage of it.

    Article: 4K Blu-ray Discs Arriving in 2015

The current Sony 4K movies don't use the wider color gamut (10 bit vs. 8 bit used today) nor the high dynamic range (HDR), each of which will give a more noticeable improvement then the resolution bump from 1080p to 2160p. Furthermore, the benefit of an increase in resolution is highly...

Haha I was thinking the same thing too. 3D part two. Damn you Fox, don't be that way. Even Sony is allowing it's 4K media player to be playable on all 4K TVs. Pisses me off that Samsung would allow this to happen and exclude Sony customers, while Sony has let Samsung customers in on...

They would be downloads, not streamed (although they may allow you to do both, even though the streaming version would be at a much lower bitrate). I can stream 4K Netflix just fine. Even though the total bitrate is around 15mbps, it still looks slightly better than the BD (although not...

Good point Dave. I should have thought of that before posting. I wonder which movies they will eventually remaster.

    Article: 4K Blu-ray Discs Arriving in 2015

That's what I was referring to. With the general progression towards digital distribution, I can't imagine that 4K digital will be waiting for 4K Blu-ray to catch up, in terms of available content. I believe more will always be available on digital (just like 1080p is today). So those...

For physical discs I would agree, but I think they will eventually be available in a higher quality via digital downloads.

That's because it was $19.99 everywhere. Even the 3D steelbook at Best Buy was $19.95. BTW, it looks like we won't be getting any more 3D share info at HMM. Apparently sales are so bad that they aren't even worth tracking anymore...

Congrats. That's a nice TV you have. I bought the Sony 65X900A last May and have no regrets.

Well that's great. So not only people with 1080p TV have to buy new TVs, EVERYBODY will have to buy a new TV to take full advantage of this new format. How many 4K TVs without capabilities for displaying the extra specs will be sold by the time this hits the market?

Will you be able to enjoy 10 bit video and the wider color gamut on any 4K TV that is available today?

I'm sure the UHD group wasn't created just for Blu-ray but rather for all means of 4K content delivery in general. So improved color spec and 10 bit will surely be a feature in streaming/downloads as well.

I was going to mention that myself. But won't all the 4Ks being sold so far not be able to take advantage of those extra features?

    Article: 4K Blu-ray Discs Arriving in 2015

I agree. The only way I think it will thrive is if prices are high like laserdisc. You can't have low volume and low prices and make it work. Laserdisc worked because prices were high, but that probably won't work today because the price for content has devalued enormously and people won't...

    Article: 4K Blu-ray Discs Arriving in 2015

I don't know that much about the subject, but according to the IMDb, the intermediate is a 4K master. But of course the real proof is in the pudding. Sony only puts new movies on their server that have been mastered in 4k. For example, The Interview and The Equalizer are not available...

Amazing Spider-Man 2 has a 4K digital intermediate, not 2K. I have the 4K version from Sony's 4K Unlimited service and you can certainly tell the difference in resolution between it and the Blu-ray (which I also have, because I wanted the 3D version as well).

    Article: 4K Blu-ray Discs Arriving in 2015

I would interprete that fall launch date as some kind of goal rather than anything firm. In fact, until a few of the major studios speak up in support of it, I don't have any expectations for 4k to be released on Blu-ray at all. Studio support is all that really matters, regardless of what...

I'm definitely a disc guy Rick. However if the best quality on a certain movie is on digital then I'll want to watch that instead. Of course at this time there are not too many cases of that (restricted to the 4K movies by Sony and those movies in HD that haven't been released on Blu-ray yet).

    Article: 4K Blu-ray Discs Arriving in 2015

Well if 4k were restricted to digital (due to the studios lack of support for 4k BD), then there's not going to be that much content to worry about having a fleet of 4TB hard drives to harbor your content. Blu-ray only releases a fraction of what DVD does and 4K will offer an even smaller...

It would balance out if the hackers took it all down AND your house burned down at the same time. With UV digital you can store downloaded versions as well as streaming or re-downloading from the cloud. And your purchase is protected by the UV Consortium, which BTW has over 80 companies in...

Well if you look hard enough for negatives on any delivery system then you're going to find them. I'd rather have discs myself and without having to connect to the internet to play them. In fact, I have 3 Oppo players that are ISO-capable, so I love my control as much as the next guy. But...

Yes it's probably a pipe dream. Unfortunately for catalog movie fans, the vast majority of profits are made on new productions, which tend to cater to the lowest common denominator in this global market. New movies will always sell on home video no matter what the format. The only real...

How fast do you expect for a 4K movie? Certainly faster than ordering a Blu-ray movie from Amazon but no it's not instantaneous. But if DL speed is an issue than the X10 will allow automatic downloading of popular new movies, which will be ready instantly if you decide to purchase them. I...

    Article: 4K Blu-ray Discs Arriving in 2015

At some point, when digital growth stalls and declines (once people get bored with "collecting" digital movies), then then studios will have to reassess their focus and decide that perhaps physical needs more promotion. They are neglecting it now but I don't think their indifference will be...

    Article: 4K Blu-ray Discs Arriving in 2015

It certainly helps to have it hardwired and it makes more sense too. I have the Sony XMP-10 4K media player and it only takes me about 3-4 hours to download a 4K movie from their site (average DL speed is about 25 mbps). Not exactly ideal, but fast enough to be able to watch it the same day...

    Article: 4K Blu-ray Discs Arriving in 2015

Digital HD is growing quickly but I expect growth to slow down and eventually decline. Physical media has been declining for years, but the good thing is, is that the decline has been steady and not accelerating. That means that it will have a bottom that hopefully isn't too low and will...
